Lambda Alpha News
A new line of Lambda Alpha mer-chandise is available in 2018. Featur-ing the Lambda Alpha logo, the new merchandise consists of t-shirts and baseball-style caps. We also hope to of-fer car stickers in the near future. The graduation regalia stoles and pins of-fered in past years are also still available from the society. See the back of the newsletter for ordering details.
As 2018 begins, Lambda Alpha is experiencing several significant middle-age transitions, consisting of a recent re-tirement, a new virtual office format, a new administrative coordinator, and a new web page. Perhaps most important-ly, March 2018 marks the 50th anniver-sary of Lambda Alpha. Considered to-gether, theses important life events for the society offer the opportunity in 2018 to look back with nostalgic reflection and look forward optimistically toward future possibilities. Since 1985, Ball State University has hosted the Lambda Alpha National Office in the Department of Anthropolo-gy. To reduce operating costs and in-crease funding for student awards, the Lambda Alpha National Office has left Ball State and has adopted a virtual office format. In addition to the new virtual office format, the society has also (continued on page 6)

Sydney Stark, member of Theta of Ohio at Case Western Reserve Universi-
ty, received the 2017 National Lambda Alpha Senior Scholarship Award for $5,000
and an award plaque. Her faculty sponsor was Dr. Lawrence P. Greksa.
Sydney’s research concentration is in medical anthropology and her experi-ences and accomplishments reflect her academic interests. Sydney has been certi-fied as a Birth Doul, in American Red Cross CPR and First Aid, and in Global Health. She has experience as an employee and volunteer at medical and rape cri-sis centers. She wrote an anthropological honors thesis that examined college age women’s embodied experience of menstruation and its effect on perception and identity. She also completed a study abroad experience that examined the health care system and social policies of the Netherlands. Awards she has received in-clude the Peter Witt Scholarship given by Case Western Reserve University. Syd-ney has collaborated on two publications, and they appear in Addiction and Ameri-
can Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has also presented at three nation-al conferences. Finally, her memberships, besides Lambda Alpha, include Phi Bet-ta Kappa, National Collegiate Honors Society, Carl F. Wittke Award Selection Committee, National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, and the American Civil Liberties Union. Sydney intends to work towards a M.A. degree in medical anthropology and global health. After finishing her M.A. degree, ac-cording Dr. Hildebrand “she will continue to medical school to receive training as
an obstetrician/gynecologist working to better the dire health situation in under-privileged populations in the US and internationally.” Lambda Alpha offers it con-gratulations to Sydney for her accomplishments.

Ashlee Hart is a member of Lambda of New York. Dr. Peter F. Biehl of
University at Buffalo, SUNY nominated Ashlee for the $2,000 research grant.
Ashlee’s proposal is entitled “Convening Cultures in Ancient Thrace: An Evalua-
tion of Greek Interaction on Technological Choice within Indigenous Thracian Ce-
ramics from Late Iron Age Western Bulgaria.” In this study she is exploring the
influence of foreign trade relationships on indigenous identity.
Tisa Loewen was nominated by Dr. Scott Williams of New York University.
Tisa became a lifetime member of Lambda Alpha when she was an undergraduate
at New Paltz State University of New York (Rho of New York). Tisa received a
$2,000 research grant for a study of the Liburnian culture at an Iron Age site in
present day Croatia. She is studying the effects of urbanization on the Liburnian
people and their skeletal remains as they underwent Roman development. Her re-
search proposal is called “Nadin Necropolis Skeletal Analysis.”
Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth is a member of Delta of Kentucky at the Uni-
versity of Kentucky. He was nominated for a $2,000 research grant by Dr. Ann
Kingsolver. Jasper’s research proposal is called “Musical Instrument Makers, Ap-
palachian Forests, and the Re-enchantment of Livelihood and Material in West Vir-
ginia.” This research investigates the meaningful craft relationships between in-
strument makers and their materials in the forests of the Allegheny region of West
Virginia.

(continued from page 1) developed a new web page. The web page is designed to have a simple format, is easy to locate on the internet, and is effec-tive for communicating with anthropology students and faculty sponsors. Melanie Cabak, a historical archaeolo-gist with an M.A. degree in anthropology from the University of South Carolina (1991), has replaced Barb Di Fabio as ad-ministrative coordinator for the society. The new office contact information is listed on the contact page of the society’s website and in the newsletter. More Scholarships and Grants in 2018 The primary purpose of Lambda Al-pha is to recognize and reward academic ex-cellence among anthropology stu-dents. Consequently, an expanded number of scholarships and grants will be awarded in 2018 for the 50th anniversary. In addition to the annual scholarship and grant awards, a 2018 student paper competition will be sponsored by the socie-ty, called the 50th Anniversary Lambda Al-pha Founders Student Paper Competition. The paper competition is intended to com-memorate the dedication of past students, faculty, and chapter staff over the past half-century that have supported Lambda Alpha through their membership, mentorship, and assistance. The paper competition will fea-ture both an undergraduate and graduate student awards category. The winning pa-pers from the competition will be consid-ered for publication in the Lambda Alpha Journal as a 2018 50th anniversary thematic volume. Lambda Alpha chapter faculty spon-
sors are encouraged to contact the society at laanthro@gmail.com if you are willing to volunteer as a judge for the student paper competition. The paper competition rules a will be available in early February in the-newsletter and on the webpage at laan-thro.org. We ask that chapter faculty sponsors interested in participating in the paper com-petition consider nominating an original pa-per from one undergraduate student member and one graduate student member per chap-ter for the competition. If the 50th anniversary student paper competition is a success, then the society will consider periodically sponsoring paper prizes in the future..
Student and Faculty Highlights
In 2018 the 50th anniversary newsletter will be distributed via email by mid-year in June after the society awards have been dis-tributed to students. For the 50th anniver-sary newsletter we ask that chapter faculty sponsors consider submitting professional biographical sketches of their former stu-dents that illustrate the Lambda Alpha ideals of academic excellence and achieve-ment. We would especially like to show-case career-related student success stories from the chapters located across the coun-try. This is a great opportunity to highlight noteworthy students, so please let us know about your chapter’s high-achievers over the years. We also welcome professional sketches about noteworthy former chapter faculty sponsors that helped encourage and support student achievement and suc-cess. Chapter photographs, past and pre-sent, are also encouraged for the 50th anni-versary newsletter.

Our annual newsletter is the best venue for sharing your chapter’s activities and pro-grams. Useful items to include are accom-plishments, recognition, and on-going efforts of individual Lambda Alpha members con-
nected with your department; and cooperative projects conducted under the aegis of Lambda Alpha such as lectures series, dedications, etc.
Chapter News
Delta of Virginia (Longwood College)
The Delta of Virginia Chapter of Lambda
Alpha is in its thirteenth year. This year we
bought six new into Lambda Alpha, who
were recognized at our annual Department
Honors Award Banquet. This brings us to a
total of 210 members that we have recruited
since the establishment of our chapter.
We began the year with new inspired lead-
ership that organized several evening meet-
ings around presentations by students of
their travels and research projects. One
member, for example, had participated in a
study of Pacific Island reefs during the
summer and presented a slide lecture of her
experiences voyaging across the pacific.
We had a change of leadership Spring se-
mester and lost much of that initial impetus
to organize such events. However, we stay
in regular contact and new members are or-
ganizing for next year, when we hope to
travel to the American Anthropological an-
nual meeting.

cal Society students from Georgia Southern Uni-

ogy raised over $600 selling donuts, sweets, and
drinks in a hurricane-relief fundraiser for the U.S.
Virgin Islands in October, after Hurricanes Irma
and Maria caused wide-spread destruction on St.
Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John.
Funds raised were gifted to “My Brother’s Work-
shop,”(MBW) a Virgin Islands non-profit charita-
ble organization that assists at-risk youth to be-
come positive members of society through men-
toring, counseling, training, education and job
placement. This charity was selected by the stu-
dents of both societies because of MBW’s dili-
gent and generous work in feeding people free,
hot meals for several weeks after the storms hit
the islands.
Hurricanes Irma and Maria, classified as two of
the most powerful and deadly Atlantic storms in
2017, left a devastating trail of destruction in the
Caribbean and along the southeastern Atlantic
coast. The storms resulted in catastrophic damage
and fatalities, affecting an estimated 10 million
people.

Announcing the 50th Anniversary
Lambda Alpha National Scholarships,
Graduate Student Research Grants and
50th Anniversary Lambda Alpha Founder’s
Student Paper Competition
The Lambda Alpha National Executive Council Members encourage Lambda Alpha chapter faculty sponsors to submit nominees for the 2018 Lambda Alpha an-nual awards. In recognition of Lambda Alpha’s 50th anniversary, in 2018 we are providing $30,000 in student awards. This is a substantial increase in award fund-ing compared to previous years. Details regarding the 2018 awards are summarized on page 11. The society anticipates continuing to offer a larger number of scholar-ships and grants in the foreseeable future due to the substantial savings from office reorganization in 2017. Please select one undergraduate senior nominee per chapter for the three Na-tional Scholarships. Please nominate one graduate student per chapter for the six Graduate Student Research Grants. The graduate student nominee should request support for research in one of the three award categories: archeology, bioanthropol-ogy, or cultural/linguistic anthropology. Please select two nominees per chapter for the Lambda Alpha Founder’s Student Paper Competition, consisting of a paper sub-mission from one undergraduate student and a paper submission from one graduate student. These are limited and closed competitions with a sizable award. A well-qualified candidate has a reasonable chance to win. To ensure a quality set of can-didates, applicants that are not society members will be allowed to join the honor society. New applicants must be accepted by their chapter by the award deadline. To apply for membership, chapter faculty sponsors should submit a printed, signed application form and the $25 lifetime membership fee before the competition dead-line. The application deadline for scholarships and grants is March 15, 2018. Print-ed, official copies of student transcripts and the signed release forms must be post-marked by March 15, 2018 to be eligible for the awards competition. Please submit applications to the Lambda Alpha National Office (Attn: Melanie Cabak). Additional awards information is at laanthro.org.

Λογος Ανθροποσ Established in 1968, the purpose of Lambda Alpha National Anthropology Honor Society is to both acknowledge and reward academic excel-lence. The name Lambda Alpha is composed of the initial letters of the Greek words Logos Anthropos (Λογος Ανθροποσ), meaning the study of humankind.
Lambda Alpha supports scholarship and research by acknowledging and
honoring superior achievement in the discipline among students engaged in
the study of anthropology. Superior academic performance is recognized
through membership in the society. Lambda Alpha rewards academic ex-
cellence through the annual awarding of student scholarships, research
grants, and student paper prizes.
