Master Phonemic Awareness

IntroductionWith your understanding of more

phonemes, you are more sensitive to the letter sounds you hear, which helps you in spelling a lot.

So far, you have learnt vowel sounds: SM, LM and D

And you have learn consonant sounds: P, F and N.

You need to sound out letter sounds when you are spelling, making phonemic awareness an important listening skill.

Auditory SkillsThe speed and accuracy - how fast and

how well – in which you convert sounds to letters or spell is determined by your Auditory Skills.

Like any skill, you need focus and practice.

Over time, it becomes automatic as you can read quickly and accurately without much thinking.

Basic Auditory SkillsWe start with the easy letter sounds first.

For all the vowels in AE 1 - 5 , we use Short Monophthongs as our practice:

/a/ as in 'ant' /e/ as in 'bed' /i/ as in 'tin'/o/ as in 'frog' /u/ as in 'bus' For Auditory Exercise 1: /b/ , /e/ , /d/ , /m/ For Auditory Exercise 2: /n/ , /o/ , /p/ , /s/ For Auditory Exercise 3: /t/ , /f/ , /k/ , /a/ , /l/ For Auditory Exercise 4: /r/ , /w/ , /i/ , /u/For Auditory Exercise 5: Mixed

Learning ActivityA score card is given for these basic

auditory exercises. Refer to Page 53 of your LG.

Follow the instructions on the score card for training and practice.
