Toward the Gaels: The Celts

• The Celts were a loose collection of people who lived in central Europe and Great Britain from around 700bce to the birth of the Common Era

• There were many groups (tribes) of Celts, speaking a vaguely common language.

• By 500bce they were the most powerful cultural group in Europe

• Austria, Switzerland, southern France, Spain, Belgium, and Britain.
