THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION

Education is a fundamental human right, which is necessary for the exercise of all other human rights. However, only a few children are able or allowed to go to school.

130 million of the world’s 15 to 24 year-olds can neither read nor write

Nearly 115 million children are out of school, 53% of which are girls

Because… they are made to work they are recruited into the armed forces their families do not have the means to pay for schooling discrimination and racism undermine their chance to receive

any form of education they face violence as they pursue their education

Everyone has the right to education. Education should be free, at least during elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education, in particular, should be made compulsory.

Education should be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It should promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups.
