Let’s Talk About SEX!

The Reproductive System

What is Sex?

Sex is a requirement for procreation, which means to produce offspring.

There are two types: 1) Asexual and 2) Sexual

Asexual – produces genetic identical offspring.

Sexual – produces genetically similar offspring.

What is Sexual Reproduction?

Sexual Reproduction – the creation of a NEW organism (with DIFFERENT DNA) by combining the genetic material (the gametes) of two organisms.

Egg + Sperm = Zygote

Reproductive Organs

Peek-a-boo—I See You!!

Boy Parts

Vas Deferens – tube connecting the testes and the urethra. Semen, fluid mixed with sperm, is made here.

Penis – Contains the opening to the urethra. Urine and semen exit here.

Urethra – Urine and semen leave via this tube.

Testicle – sperm and testosterone are produced here. They are outside of the body. Sperm need cool temps. for proper development.

Girl Parts

Ovary—there are two. Eggs and estrogen are produced here.

Fallopian Tubes—fertilization occurs here. Egg passes through it to get to uterus.

Uterus—muscular organ where zygote implants. If NO implantation, lining sheds causing menstruation.

Vagina—passageway that leads to the uterus. It is the “Birth Canal”.

Puberty—Where Did that Come From?

Puberty—is the maturation of reproductive organs leading to sperm production and ovulation. It results in the ability to produce offspring.

Puberty—the Change!

Males Females

The Menstrual Cycle

Is a 28 day cycle in which an egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube.

Egg has 28-36 hrs to be fertilized by the sperm.

If fertilized, the zygote has 14 days to implant into the uterus.

If NOT fertilized, egg will be released via menstruation.

Menstruation

The uterus contains a lining where a zygote would “implant” and develop.

Each cycle, if fertilization does NOT occur, this lining sheds and is released via the vagina.

Lining will be replaced in the next cycle.

The shedding is called menstruation, or a period, and can last 4-6 days.

Pregnancy

Occurs if the fertilized zygote implants into the uterus.

The zygote then develops into an embryo and then a fetus.

Pregnancy last 40 weeks.

Baby is born either vaginally or by Cesarean Section.

Contraceptives—Baby Maybe?

Oral Contraceptives—hormones which prevent ovulation. When used properly, they are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Condoms—prevent sperm from entering the uterus. With proper use they are 96-98% effective in preventing pregnancy.
