World Cultures

Think about culture!

• What words do you think abou?

What aspect of culture do you think each picture represents?

Which culture is each picture from?

Now, think about these cultures! Choose one of them and compare it to your own culture?

Use superlatives. What are the best things about Colombia?

• What things should you not miss?

• Use “miss” with a second verb!

Do the text as a listening…

• What does each person say? Which aspect of each culture shouldn’t be missed?

• Look at these sentences! Are they active or passive?

Look at the sentences you have written! Write down all of the differences between them and these sentences!

Katie has been learning to bake for two years

Rosie has written a book about Kenya..

The main difference is that the two mention PEOPLE!

• She ate the orange.

Passive expressionsWhat’s the difference?

• The orange is eaten.

Make “active” or “passive” sentences with the following pictures….

• Look at the structure provided on page 23.

• When do we use passive sentences?

To pay the bill

To sign a paper

To eat/have a starter

To eat a main course

To eat/have a dessert

To sing a song

To paint a picture

Look at the words in “Speaking naturally”.

• Is there anything strange about these words?• What do they have in common?

MIME – You are a monkey at a dinner party!

What kind of things would a monkey do at a dinner party?

• Are these good things to do?

• What kinds of things would you do?

• THESF ARE BAD AND GOOD MANNERS!

• What other good and bad manners can you think of?

Work in pairs – What does each phrase mean? (Maybe act the phrases out).

What things are good manners and what things are bad manners in Colombia?

• C – Copy the structures from A.

• Think of an example of the following,

• Verb + ing is rude.• (gerund)

• It is impolite to go to party + preposition

+ verb +compliment.

• It’s rude + infinite (to + verb)

Look at p25! How do we make these expressions negative?

Give me examples of subjects in English!

• Now, we can use verb like subjects.• Smiling is polite when you

e meet someone new!

• Running is healthy.

Can you think of an example of this?

What prepositions can you think of in English?

What form of the verb do we use after the preposition?

• He finished writing about travelling around the world.

Can you think of an example of this?

After adjectives we use the infinitive

• It’s nice to offer to paint people.

Which of the following structures applies to the following?

• Look at the questions!

If you want to say something very clearly and without confusion, then we say

something DIRECTLY

Is it easy to life abroad?

• Have you ever considered living abroad?

Write down your “for” and “against”s of living abroad.

• Do this in groups.

Now, swap and summarise what the other group has said.

Do the text as a listeining! What things would you both “miss”?

• What things would the man in the text miss?

Do you remember in level 9 when you talked about impressions?

• What words can you use to make a sentence more certain?

• It’s definitely a good idea.

• It might be a bad idea.

• WHICH OF THESE IS MORE CERTAIN? WHY? WHAT DO THE ABOVE SENTENCES MEAN?

• LOOK AT THE COMMENTS IN B. MAKE THEM “MORE” AND “LESS” DIRECT!

• IN PAIRS! Work out the meaning of the proverb!
