Motorists Should check 511 Before traveling, Be Prepared for ConditionsNY State Department of Transportation is reminding motorists they can access NYSDOT’s free 511NY traffic and travel information system, which provides real-time travel information, by calling 511 or visiting www.511NY.org.
The website features a winter travel advisory system, with real-time travel reports and a color-coded map indicating which state roads are snow covered, ice covered, wet, dry, or closed to help drivers determine if travel is advisable. The system provides real-time snow and ice conditions for interstates and other heavily traveled roads, as reported by snowplow operators. Users should consult 511NY before traveling, or have a passenger access the system for information.
Some of the most important tips for safe winter driving include:
• Never follow a snowplow too closely or attempt to pass one.
• Adjust speed for road conditions and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles;
• Schedule extra time for winter travel and be patient during ice and snow removal operations;
• Assume that bridge surfaces are slippery, as they freeze more quickly than road surfaces;
•Watch for black ice, which can be difficult to see but makes conditions slippery when pavement temperatures are below freezing;
• Have a cell phone handy, if possible, but do not text while driving; distracted driving is illegal and becomes even more dangerous during storm events;
• Never venture from your vehicle if snowbound;Equip your car with emergency supplies including sand, shovel, flares, booster cables, rope, ice scraper, portable radio, flashlight, blankets and extra warm clothes;
• Inform a responsible person of your destination, intended route, and estimated time of arrival; and
• Keep calm and do not panic in case of a vehicle breakdown, accident, or if you become snowbound.

airbag Fraud: Danger Behind The Wheel Drivers and passengers generally assume the airbags in a car will work properly. However, when it comes to used vehicles, that may not be the case
The federal government recently announced that up to 250,000 counterfeit airbags may have been used to replace deployed units. These faulty airbags may explode or not deploy at all in the event of a collision.
To protect yourself when buying a used car, here are a few tips:
• Turn on the ignition. The airbag indicator light should appear momentarily and then go out. If the indicator light remains on or flashes, this may indicate a problem with the airbag system.
• get the Carfax vehicle History Report. The report may include salvage or junk titles, accident indicators such as frame damage or airbag deployments, and repair details.
• Another way to help check for faulty airbags is to get a professional inspection by a mechanic or airbag specialist.

Three Steps To Quieter FloorsThe next time you need to squash the squeaks in your floor, you may be glad to learn about a special tool that can help you do it quickly and easily.
Keeping floorboards from moving is critical when it comes to silencing a squeak, so the tool is designed to let you screw down the floorboards and silence that squeaky floor-even when the area is carpeted. Called Squeeeeek No More, it comes in a kit that also contains specially designed screws that can pass through a carpet without causing any damage.
That means you don’t have to pull up the carpet to screw down the floorboards. That can be a real time-saver for do-it-yourselfers.
Step one: Locate the floor joists using the joist-finding tool that comes in the kit. Then push the alignment and depth control fixture, which also comes in the kit, firmly into the carpet.
Step two: Place your weight around the fixture and drive the scored screw down as far as the fixture allows it to go.
Step three: Place the gripper part of the fixture over the screw head. Then, rock the fixture left to right, until the screw head snaps off. The screw breaks at the weak spot that is consistently just below the surface of the floor. For more information, call O’Berry Enterprises at (800) 459-8428 or visit www.squeaknomore.com. (NAPSI)

Home affordable Foreclosure Alternatives ProgramIf you can't afford your mortgage payment and it's time for you to transition to more affordable housing, the Home Affordable Foreclosure AlternativesSM (HAFA) program may be for you.
HAFA provides two options: a short sale or a Deed-in-Lieu (DIL) of foreclosure. In a short sale, the mortgage company lets you sell your house for an amount that falls "short" of the amount you still owe. In a DIL, the mortgage company lets you give the title back, transferring ownership back to them.
You may be eligible for HAFA if you meet all of the following criteria:
• You have a documented financial hardship.
• You have not purchased a new house within the last 12 months.
• Your first mortgage is less than $729,750.
• You obtained your mortgage on or before January 1, 2009.
• You must not have been convicted within the last 10 years of felony larceny, theft, fraud, forgery, mon-ey laundering or tax evasion in connection with a mortgage or real estate transaction.
•*Eligibility criteria are for guidance only. Contact your mortgage servicer to see if you qualify for HAFA.
If you have additional questions about getting mortgage help, contact a HUD-approved housing expert at 888-995-HOPE (4673). (www.makinghomeaffordable.gov)

Don't Get caught in the cold: Know the Facts About Winter Gas Mileage
Winter and colder temperatures are notorious for creating difficult driving conditions that can place strain on drivers and their vehicles. And as the temperature drops this winter, so will your gas mileage.
Colder temperatures mean cold oil, tires and cold air in the carburetor - all factors that reduce gas mileage. With higher prices lingering at the gas pumps, a few fuel-saving tips can help protect your miles per gallon (MPg) this winter.
*Warm your car up the right way
Many people believe the myth that you must warm your car up in the winter. The truth is that idling your car actually destroys your MPg and isn't necessary.
Modern cars don't require a warm-up, even when the temperatures drop below zero, according to AAA. Modern engines, those built since about 1990, have fuel injection systems rather than carburetors and need no more than 10 to 30 seconds to get oil moving through the engine properly.
Auto experts recommend driving moderately in cold weather to allow the engine and other systems to warm up slowly and reduce wear and tear. So even though many people choose to warm up their car in the winter for personal comfort or to defrost windows, idling a vehicle for more than even one minute is simply wasting gas.
*Get your car winter ready
From changing the oil to checking the tire pressure on a regular basis, improving your winter gas mileage is easier than you might think.
"Your vehicle's motor oil becomes thicker in colder temperatures, which adds stress to the engine," says Jim Rossbach, CHS director of technical services
and quality. "Try a thinner grade of oil to keep your engine running smoothly in the colder months." Rossbach recommends using a high-performing synthetic oil like Cenex Maxtron, which is designed to perform well in low temperatures and improve fuel economy.
Proper tire inflation can also improve fuel economy by up to 3 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. It is important to check tire pressure several times throughout the winter when colder temperature can reduce tire pressure at a rate of one pound per square inch (PSI) for every 10 degrees change.
*Lighten the load
Extra weight from cargo or snow also reduces fuel efficiency. Cleaning out your car and clearing off heavy snow is an easy way to get better gas mileage.
In the past, carrying sandbags in the trunk was a common method for gaining more traction and helping rear-wheel drive cars perform better on snow and ice. Today, most cars are front-wheel drive with the engine over the front wheels, creating that same grip. Carrying extra weight does not add traction on snow and ice, but simply lowers your fuel economy.
For more gas-saving tips and to learn how you can nominate someone for a free tank of gas, visit www.tanksofthanks.com. (BPT)

Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center agrees and reminds us that, "From intricate crown mouldings and filigreed fireplace mantels to traditional wainscoting and baseboard trim, generations of designers and homeowners have counted on hardwood mouldings and millwork to add warmth, character, and beauty to their favorite living spaces." So let's get started.
Where has all the millwork gone?Years ago, most American homes were built with at least a minimum level of interior ornamentation. Builders used hardwood details to make each residence unique, reflecting the individuality and taste of their owners. Unfortunately, after World War II, the popularity of millwork began to wane. Builders sacrificed craftsmanship for speed in order to keep pace with an unprecedented demand for new homes in the country's booming suburbs.
Today, most new homes in America continue to be built with time and cost-efficiency in mind, leaving homeowners with few options for endowing their residences with a sense of individuality. But that doesn't mean homeowners have to settle for cookie-cutter designs.
What's a homeowner to do?Susan Muschweck, a Pittsburgh-based interior designer, says painting walls and upgrading floors is a great way to dress up a listless space, but for
many clients, she often suggests another cost-effective option. "I like to recommend hardwood moulding," she says. "Trim brings a room to life. And by using hardwood, you really add permanent warmth, distinction and value to your home."
To make the best of your hardwood investment, Muschweck says consistency is critical. "When adding millwork, use crown, baseboard and other millwork patterns that complement each other," she explains. "Be sure to maintain the same style throughout your home, but capitalize on the design flexibility different spaces offer. In the dining room, for example, choose wainscoting or a chair rail to create a sense of charm or formality."
What's the best wood to use?Nothing stands up to wear and tear better than American hardwoods, yet experience tells Pittsburgh architect Mary Cerrone that certain hardwood species are more suited to particular applications than others.
"For millwork that is likely to get bumped or beat-up, such as window and door casings, baseboards, paneling and chair rails, I suggest using a harder species, like white oak," she says. "For mouldings and millwork in less accessible areas - especially those that will be painted - homeowners can save money by using less expensive hardwoods, such as poplar."
imagination makes millwork affordableCustom moulding can be pricey, but the American Hardwood Information Center says there are simple, creative ways to get the custom look you want, at a cost you can afford.
"Lumber supply centers and home improvement stores can have up to 350 off-the-shelf moulding patterns available," Jovanovich says. "Combining or 'stacking' two or more stock moulding 'profiles' creates the effect of a single, hand-carved piece of wood and provides the unique look of custom millwork at a fraction of the cost."
Or achieve the look of a more expensive hardwood, like cherry, by using a cherry stain on a less expensive hardwood. This technique works especially well in decorative applications above eye-level, such as crown moulding and recessed ceiling patterns.
How to transform plain into sizzling?Use your imagination and be sure to visit the American Hardwood Information Center at www.HardwoodInfo.com to see a multitude of ways that mouldings and millwork crafted from authentic American hardwoods will dress up your home. (BPT)
transform an aging room into a Dazzling ShowcaseLooking for a simple, inexpensive way to turn an aging family room into a dazzling showcase? Inspired design professionals will tell you one of the most popular and cost-effective ways to transform a plain space into a room with sizzle is to adorn it with millwork crafted from American hardwoods.

Whether it's the new year, a new job, a new baby or simply the right time to get your finances order, the process usually starts with setting some goals. The first step in the process of achieving your financial goals is to recognize what needs to be done to put yourself in the position you want to be in. Once you've identified those goals, you just need to figure out how to accomplish them.
TransUnion, one of the national credit reporting companies, recently asked people what type of financial goals they were looking to accomplish in the next year. Here are four of the most common answers and how you can achieve them if you, too, are looking to obtain financial health:
* Spend less on unnecessary expenses: The first step in cutting out unnecessary expenses is to determine your current spending habits to understand just how much disposable income you have so you can set a monthly budget and manage it wisely. TransUnion Plus is a new tool that allows you input all of your information about your bank
accounts, loans and any other accounts that influence how you budget. By examining your spending habits during the past few months and inputting monthly payments and deposits using this tool, you can get a better idea about where you can possibly cut spending. To help stay on track, it is important to check your budget monthly to see how you are doing.
* achieve healthier credit: Start by checking your score. This will give you a baseline, making it easier to track your progress. From there, check your credit reports frequently and look for any bad financial habits that may be keeping your score down, such as late payments or bloated credit card balances. Checking regularly can also help you minimize your exposure to identity theft and ensure your credit report accurately reflects your credit history. -If you discover information on your report that might not be accurate, you can find an online dispute form at TransUnion.com.
* Save more money: Once you've created your monthly budget, you can begin to identify ways to
cut unnecessary expenses and save more. Sit down with your financial adviser to see what type of investments, such as a 401k, make sense with any money that's left over. As you are reassessing your financial goals, review your investments to solidify your returns.
* Pay down existing debts: For most folks, paying down debts is the first step toward saving more, so the two often go hand in hand. Identify which debts carry the highest interest rates and focus on paying those off first. Attack credit card debt before you increase principal payments on "good" debt like students loans with low interest rates. As you're setting your monthly budget, dedicate any money that's left over to paying down your debts.
When you're setting financial goals, it pays to develop a plan that you can execute and then have the discipline to stick to it. For more information about how you can achieve your financial goals and obtain budgeting tools, visit www.transunionplus.com.(BPT)
