Followinglastyear’ssuccesswithofferingbulbsofthedaffodil“PinkSilk”tomemberssothatsomeoftheresultingbloomscouldbeenteredintoclass10oftheSpringShow,similararrangementshavebeenmadefor2011.Thistimethebulbis“Avalanche”andsoifyouboughtsomedonotforgettoenter!
Talkingofdaffodilsotherthan“Avalanche”,ifyoufinditconfusingtoknowwhichdivisionyourflowersarein,thedaffodilchart(seeindexforpagenumber)mayhelp.FailingthatcontactRichardHilsonorPatWhetstone(contactdetailsareontheofficersandcommitteelist)eitherbeforeoronthedayoftheSpringShow.
Althoughitistoolatetobuysomeofthe“Avalanche”bulbsifyoumissedout,thereisanotherinnovationfor2011.FortheSummerShowthereisanadditionalclass223forpotatoesof:
“One dish of three potatoes grown from a seed potato purchased fromLindfieldHorticulturalSocietyinapotatobagsuppliedbytheSociety”.
SeventeenlitresizepotatobagswillbeonsaletomembersattheSpringShowtogetherwithaseedpotato.ThepotatowillbeWinston,afirstearlyandquick-maturingvarietyandoneofthebestforexhibitingpurposeswhich,ifplantedassoonaspossibleaftertheSpringShow,shouldbereadyintimeforexhibitingattheSummerShow.ThepotatoeswillhavealreadybeenchittedbyRichardHilsonandbereadyforplanting.Apotatowithbagandgrowinginstructionswillcomeatthebargainpriceof£1.IhopemanyofyouwillgivethisagoandlookforwardtoseeingtheresultsinJuly.
Lastyearanewclass,368wasaddedtotheAutumnShowof:“Grasses,onevase”.Nowgrasseshavebecomeverypopular in recentyearsbutnot itseems inLindfield for thenumberofentrieswashardlyoverwhelming,infactzero.Wellwehaveleftitinfor2011inthehopeofabetterresponse.

Thecommitteehasdecidedtoholdaneweventin2011,a“RoseEvening”whichwillbeheldonWednesday22ndJuneat8pm.Thisissucharecentdecisionthatitisnotincludedonyournewmembershipcards.
ThebackgroundtothisisthatsomemembershavefeltthatbecauseourSummerShowisheldinJulyitisalwaystoolatetobenefitfromJune’sfirstflushofroses.OurSummerShowdateissetasacompromiseinordertogetthemaximumnumberofbothsummerflowersandvegetablesattheirbest,aswellasnotclashingwithneighbouringshows.Althoughwedoget rosesenteredmanyofus feel frustratedthat thequintessentialsummerflowercannotbeshowntoitsbestadvantage.Theneweventisanattempttorectifythis.
FulldetailswillbegivenintheSpringNewsletterbutbasicallyeveryoneintheVillage,whethermembersoftheSocietyornot,willbeencouragedtobringsomerosestotheKingEdwardHallforanoncompetitiveeveningatwhichtohaveachatanddrinkandtoadmire,whatwehopewillbe,ahallfullofroses.Pleaseputthedateinyourdiary.

SHOw RULES
1. Unlessotherwisestatedinthescheduleas‘OPENTOALL’,allexhibitorsotherthanchildren,mustbecurrentmembersoftheSociety.
2. TheCommitteereservestherighttorefuseanyentryand,intheeventofsuchrefusal,itisnotrequiredtogiveanyreasonorexplanation.
3. Noexhibitormaymakemorethanoneentryinanyoneclass.
4. Whereanumberorquantityofplants,flowers,fruitorvegetablesisspecifiedinthescheduleforaclass,vase,dishorcollection,neithermore nor less than the number or quantitymay be shown and anexhibitwillbedisqualifiedforanyexcessordeficiency.
If, before an exhibit is judged, any excess or deficiency is noticedandconsideredtobetheresultofanaccidentandnotofanattemptto deceive, the Show Superintendent, Show Secretary or Stewardmayeithergive theexhibitor (if athand)anopportunity to correctthemistakeorcorrectithimself/herselfbuttheofficialsshallnotbeunderanyobligationtodosoandanydisqualificationresultingfroman excess or deficiency shall be the exhibitor’s responsibility. ThejudgesmaynotcorrectanyerrorbuttheymaydirecttheattentionoftheShowSuperintendent,ShowSecretaryorStewardtoit.
5. Any exhibit that doesnot conform to thewordingof the schedule(unless corrected in accordance with Rule 4) must be disqualifiedandajudgemustwriteontheentrycard“Notaccordingtoschedule”(NAS)andaddafactualnoteastowhyitismarkedNAS.SingledishesinanNAScollectioncannotbeconsideredforanyotheraward.
6.Anyprizemaybewithheldormodifiediftheexhibitsareconsideredunworthyoftheprizeoffered.
7.Thedecisionofthejudgesshallbefinalontherelativemeritsoftheexhibits,buttheCommitteereservestherighttoreferanypointsindisputetotheShowSuperintendentforadecision.
8. Any protest must be made in writing and delivered to the ShowSecretarywithinonehouroftheopeningoftheShowtothepublic.
9. After judginghas takenplace,noexhibitorpartof anexhibitmaybealteredor removeduntil theendof theshow,exceptbyspecialpermissionoftheShowSuperintendent.

10.Allexhibits,personalproperty,etc,shallbeattheriskoftheexhibitorsandtheSocietyshallnotbeliableforcompensationforlossordamagefromanycausewhatsoever.Shouldashowforanycausenotbeheld,noexhibitorshallhaveanyclaimontheSociety.
Exhibitors will be wholly responsible for all claims made by theirown employees under the Common Law or under any statute forcompensationarisingoutoforinthecourseofsuchemploymentforinjuryorotherwise.TheSocietyhasnoresponsibilitytoanybutitsownemployees.
11.Theexhibitortowhomacuporothertrophyisawardedmustreturnit totheShowSecretarythefollowingyearpriortotheappropriateshow.
12. The prize for the best exhibits in the Flower, Vegetable (excludingcollections), Pot Plant, Fruit, Cookery and Handicraft classes is£1.00.
13.Unlessotherwisestatedintheschedule,theprizemoneyinallclasseswillbe£1.00forFirst,60pforSecondand40pforThird.
14.Where cupsor trophiesareawarded formostpoints, thesewill beawardedon thebasisof: 1st - 5points,2nd - 3pointsand3rd -2points.Collections,basket/trugandanyspecialclassesareexcluded.A`BestExhibit’willbeawardedafurther3points.Intheeventofatieforanawarddecidedonpoints,thewinnershallbetheexhibitorgainingthehighesttotalamountofprizemoney,includingthebestexhibit prizemoney, in the classes for which the equal number ofpointshasbeenawarded.
15.Unlesstheschedulespecificallystatesotherwise,anyplant,flower,fruit or vegetable exhibitedmust be the property of the person inwhosenameitisentered,andmusthavebeengrownbytheexhibitororbeeninhis/herpossessionorcaredforbyhim/herforatleasttwomonthsprior to thedateof theshow. In thecaseofaprofessionalgardener entering produce from the garden in which he/she isemployedtheexhibitsmustbeenteredinthenameoftheemployer.
16. In order to be satisfied that the conditions governing exhibits arefulfilled,theCommitteereservestherightforitsofficialrepresentativetovisitbyappointment,beforeorafterashow,thegardens/allotments

fromwhichplants,flowers,fruitorvegetableshavebeenenteredforexhibition.
17.Unlessotherwisestated in theschedule, twoormorepersonsmaynot compete separately in the same class with produce from thesame garden and/or allotment. Theymay however exhibit in jointnames.Anexceptiontothisrulehoweverappliesinpotplantclasseswheretwoormorepersonsmayexhibitseparatelyinthesameclassa different kind of pot plant to those othermembers of the samehousehold,providedthattheexhibitorismainlyresponsibilityforthemaintenanceoftheplant.
18.All exhibits should be correctly named. Errors in naming will notdisqualify the entry but the judges should regard correctness andclearness of naming as telling in favour of an exhibit in a closecompetition.Iftheexhibitordoesnotknowthenameofanycultivar,thelabelshouldbearthewords“nameunknown”.
19.PlateswillbeprovidedbytheSocietywhereappropriateandmustbeusedwhenshown in theschedule.TheSociety’svasesmustbeused for all Flower classes except where otherwise shown in theschedule.
20. Forthepurposeoftheschedule,adishcomprisesaspecifiednumberorquantityofafruitorvegetable.
21.Unlessotherwisestated,thehorticulturalclassesoftheschedulewillbeconductedinaccordancewiththerulesandstandardscontainedintheRHS’s‘TheHorticulturalShowHandbook2008edition’exceptwhere,undertheschedule,theyobviouslydonotapply.
22.Whenstaginganexhibitin‘anyothervegetable’or‘anyotherfruit’classestheexhibitorshouldrefertothe‘collections’stagingnumbers(seeindex)toascertaintheentryrequired.HoweveriftheexhibitisnotlistedtheyshouldcontacttheShowSuperintendenttoobtainarulingonquantitiesrequired.

Ingredients: 115g/4oz wholemeal flour 115g/4oz margarine 115g/4oz molasses sugar 2 eggs 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 mashed ripe bananas 115g/4oz chopped walnuts
Method: Cream fat and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, adding a little flour with the second egg. Fold in the remaining flour and baking powder with the bananas. Spread evenly in lined and greased 8inch square shallow tin. Sprinkle walnuts on top and cook in pre heated oven at 180/190 degrees C (or 350/375 degrees F) or gas mark 5 for 20-25 min. Leave in tin for 2 minutes then cut into 16 slices and cool on a wire rack.

Pastry Filling125g/4oz wholemeal flour 2 tablespoons of oil125g/4oz medium oatmeal 2 chopped onions125g/4oz margarine 2 eggspinch of salt 150 ml (1/4 pint) milk2 to 3 tablespoons of water 250g/8oz grated Cheddar Cheese salt and pepper
MethodMake the pastry in the usual way and line a 20cm (8in) flan dish and chill for 15 minutes. Meanwhile make the filling by gently frying the onions in oil, before mixing with the other ingredients. Pour the mix into the flan case and bake in a moderate oven at 190 degrees C or 375 degrees F (gas mark 5) for 30 to 40 minutes.
