Linear Equations with Fractions

Linear Equations with Variables on

Both Sides

Literal Equations (more than one

variable)

Inequalities

To cancel out a fraction multiply both sides by the reciprocal (flip the

fraction)

Cancel out the “x” term on the left or

the right side

Circle the variable you want, do the

opposite operation of all other variables

Flip the sign when you divide by a

negative

Open circle < and >Closed circle ≤ and ≥

Ex 1) Linear Equation

Ex 2) Linear Equation

3x – 7 = 2x – 4

Ex 3) Literal Equation

Solve

Ex 4) Inequality

-3x – 10 < 2

-9x + 1 = -80

x = 9

5 – 3y = 2y

y = 1

x = -16

-7x + 1 > 15

x = -2

v = 15

4 + x < 52

x < 1

2(4x + 3) = 30

x = 3

2 + 3x > -10

x > -4

3(m + 1) + 2m = 88

m=17

13 ≥ 5x – 2

x ≤ 3

5x = 2x + 12

x = 4

5p – 14 = 8p + 4

p = -6
