Studies on adding MFGM to the diets of infants and children have shown promising results regarding both neurodevelopment and defense against infections. However, the scientific base of knowledge is still limited.
More high-quality DBRCTs, with well-characterized and clearly defined fractions, are needed before any firm conclusions can be drawn with respect to positive health benefits of feeding bovine MFGM to infants and children.
Fonterra - The power of dairy complex lipids for babies
These complex lipids are important to human development: potentially aiding gut health, supporting immunity, developing the brain, and reducing the risk of infection. The complex lipids include phospholipids, gangliosides and ceramides.
It is hypothesized that the association of MFGM and probiotics leads to potentiation (synergy) of the beneficial effects seen using probiotics or milk fat globule membrane alone.
