WelcomeWelcome to the November edition ofNews & Views. It's another busy calendarof events this month!
. As in previous yearswe plan to carry a Christmas Greetingspage in the December issue, for anyonewishing to send a message to local friendsand neighbours in lieu of Christmas cards. If you would like to include a ChristmasGreeting, please let us have the details by20th November. There's no cost for thisbut donations are always gratefullyreceived! We do seem to have our begging bowl outa lot just lately, what with requests fordonations and pleas for attendance at quiznights etc. Unfortunately our printer gaveup the ghost recently, one effect of whichwas that some people received their News& Views quite late last month, soapologies to you for that. We have nowinvested in a new printer that's muchquicker and can produce the colour wewant, but it comes at a price. Hence our
renewed fund raising efforts and theinclusion of the donation envelope withthis month's News & Views! We can also now provide a very cost-effective colour printing service to otherorganisations/businesses, should you needleaflets/posters etc. Contact us for a quote! If you would like to make a donationplease drop the envelope into one of thefollowing:The Druid InnLoggerheads GaragePioneer Stores, Cadoleor, of course, 2 Cae Gwyn
Very many thanks to local organisationsand individuals who have given generousdonations to date.
In hopeful anticipationPaul & Siobhan

Llanferres Over 60sOn October 11th we had a very interesting, informative, and amusingtalk about the "Duties of being a Toastmaster".
Mr Brian Russell,(who some may remember from when he used to livein Tafarn-Gelyn and was one of the first members of the bowling club)told of his experiences at State Occasions with Royalty and M.P.s,present, Banquets, Receptions for famous people, Superstars etc. mostof whom were pleasant and co-operative, but some who were not!!
He nowadays mostly officiates at Weddings and told us of variousmishaps and awkward moments- even "Catastrophes" he has had tocope with. He now avoids seven year old Page-boys!! and two year oldFlower-girls!! and checks that the caterers have a stand-by Weddingcake!!
Our next meeting is on Tuesday Nov 8th at 2.00 pm in the Village Hallwhen Mr Alan Roberts from Denbighshire County Council who will talkabout "Refuse Collections and Re-cycling".Hopefully he can answer allour questions and tell us about future plans for the Rural areas ofDenbighshire. Olive 810 294

The meeting held on Monday October 10th proved most popularwhen Ray Bailey gave an illustrated talk entitled "Bulbs with aDifference". With a list of 73 slide photographs to be shown, eachmember was able to note ideas for their own garden throughoutthe year. No daffodils on the list and only one miniaturenarcissus species proved the variation of bulbs available. Thisproved a most enlightening talk.
Our one disappointment was that though some visitors at theshow had expressed an interest in the club, when invited, via thearticle in the News and Views, no one came. Sad to say it was theirloss!
The next meeting, which is on Monday 14th November, will be theAGM followed by a quiz.

We have recently had a visit from a group of foreign journalists on a culinarytour of Wales. They came to our fish workshop and joined local people workingwith our Head Chef to make some delicious fish meals. We made a number ofdishes all using fish that had been caught in North Wales. We used Menaimussels, trout from the Bodfari Trout Farm and this dish using sea bass from theConwy Estuary.
We used chard from Jane's garden which is a wonderful vegetable, prettyenough to be grown in a flower boarder, very easy to grow and hardy throughmost of what winter throws at it.
Pan Fried sea bass on a bed of puy lentils and chard

" Cook lentils in water with herbs for 25 - 30 minutes until lentils are soft" Remove herbs and add chopped pancetta to lentils" Finely chop chard or spinach" Place in saucepan with a small knob of butter" Oil and season fish" Heat dry pan, add fish & cook" While fish is cooking cook chard for 2 - 3 minutes until wilted" Serve lentils, topped with chard and fish placed on top

Locally Grown Vegetable BoxesWould you like to receive a weekly box of locally grown seasonal vegetables?Plans are afoot to restore the walled garden at Colomendy Hall. With support fromKingswood who now run the Outdoor Education Centre, Cadwyn Clwyd and hopefully
some other fund providers, it should soon be possible to buy local seasonal vegetables.
To make this happen, a not for profit business is being set up which will employ ahorticulturist to grow the vegetables.
The plan is to grow enough to produce about 25 vegetable boxes per week, the sale ofwhich will pay the gardener. To get started, we need to find 18 -20 families or
businesses who would be interested in receiving a weekly veg box and being part of thisproject. The cost would be anything from £7.50 - £15 per family per week depending
on the size of box you wish to receive.
To kick start this project there will be an open meeting on Tuesday 15 Novemberat 7.30pm in the meeting room at Loggerheads Country Park.
If you are interested please come along to the meeting or get in touch for some moreinformation:

The winners of the second round inthe Triquizard Tournament wereDemon Dogs, thanks to a fineperformance in the final round. Thisresult makes them overall leaders inthe tournament too.
It was another close contest on thenight, with more than half of theteams still in with a shout of winningas we entered the final round. Thiswas a somewhat contentious “WhereAm I“ round embraced whole-heartedly by some and approached with areal “go for it” attitude by others.
The Headstrongs had another good night, winning the evening long quiz and scoringmaximum points in the Halloween Round towin the spot prize too. The overalltournament is now very close with just 6points separating the first 5 teams. There’s allto play for in the final round. Thank you toeveryone who contributed to the raffle. Intotal we raised £110 towards News & Viewsfunds on the evening. Thank You.

I have been busy with county council andCHC visits this month. In the County council we had a report fromthe BCUHT and the reviews are due forEmergency acute surgery and Maternity forthe whole of North Wales in the secondweek in NovemberThe CHC has been doing spot visits in the 3DGH and 2 community hospitals I went toDolgellau hospital. Lovely place with agrand birthing centre run by communitymidwives. They were all extremely efficientand courteous and pleased to see us in ourchecking mode. These visits are to checkthe patient environment for staff attitude, ambience, cleanliness, noise etc andrestricted meal time. I also went to GlanClwyd to the Gastro unit, ward 5 and A andE. The trolleys were not too clean, and thebell pull had been removed in the disabledtoilet in A and E as someone had tried tocommit suicide with it 2 weeks prior. Noneof the outside windows had been cleanedand since the sun was shining they lookedfilthy. Apparently they can't get the peopleto clean them It is only 4 storeys high.Otherwise a good report and again the staffwere excellent except for one junior doctorwho thought we were in the way!!
I have had an email from David Coill ofNorth Wales transport about the parkingon A494 in Cadole /Loggerheads. Theyhave received 9 objections from localpeople businesses about the no parkingproposals. Mainly about the loss of trade, which would be experienced if they werebrought into being. All the objectors will bewritten to before anything is done, .so yetmore time is taken up. I think the yellow lineshould only be on the pavement side which
is where pushchairs etc have to be movedinto the road, leave the Colomendy sideavailable still to park on the verge.
My radio programmes are on radio Walesabout 'Cuts' these are about communityemergency services, whistle blowing andviolence in public spaces, especially theHealth Service, and the effect of CCTV inreducing the violence and abuse which thefront line staff experience especially in Aand E. The bus drivers now have swab kitsso if they are spat at the saliva can be sentfor DNA testing and matched if the spitterhas a previous record.
On the home front the old schoolroom inLlanarmon is now opened and the youthclub is in full swing on Wednesday 6.30 to8pm for year 6 in Ysgol Bro Famau andyouths to 17. We have pool, table tennisand other games. All in Llanferreswelcome. There is a Christmas partyDecember 14th
Finally my daughter Ruth did her finalrecital recently for her Masters in music atBangor and she got a distinction for herrecital. And a merit overall for her MA. Therecital was an hour long in variouslanguages all by heart. The German wasperfect but needed to be as the 2examiners were German!!!
Bad weather round the corner.

Our captain, who has enjoyed playing forMaeshafn since 2007 so much he is movingfrom Drury to Gwernaffield just to be closerto Maeshafn (Welsh Enterprise Village ofthe Year 2009), has had to pick a team eachweek from up to 16 players. Our secretary(me) has not had to grovel to Rhun Jones atall this year to turn up as 11th man.
Rhun Jones, as readers of this magazinemay or may not have detected in previousramblings, is possibly the world's mostunreliable cricket player, turning up atrandom, a decision usually made bywhether the wind is blowing from the westor south east. He is the recipient of the MCCRhun Jones Failing To Turn Up Award, handed out annually to Rhun Jones, whodutifully fails to turn up to the Druid tocollect his award. Currently sat in my cricketclub bag, I hope he forgets not to turn upnext year so we can give it to him.
Our annual dinner was held at the Druidthis year, and we attempted to murder ourcaptain with a bottle of Absinthe, whichsmells a little like white spirits mixed withalmonds. Many thanks to Jim and Julie, whovery patiently put up with a load of drunkmiddle-aged and aged men (plus Tom Halland myself) making a lot of noise.
Award winners were:Players’ Player of the Year - CoenraadRossow
Batsman of the Year - Coenraad Rossow
Individual Outstanding Performance of theYear - Tom Hall - 150 not out againstCorwen under 11s.
The Dave Moore Memorial Award - Bowlerof the Year - Kev Roberts
Wicket Keeper of the Year - Stu Applewhite
The John Harrison Award - Clubman of theYear - Steve Pugh
Wally of the Year - Stu Applewhite - theCaptain - got married on the last day of theseason. A senior player from Llangollenasked where Stu was during that match. When we explained, he looked disgustedand announced that it had taken him 17years to marry his wife because it had takenthat long for a free Saturday to come upduring the cricket season.
The Mo Hemming Memorial Award forComedy Moment of the Season - DaveClinton. Mr Clinton, son of well knownchicken farmer Alan Clinton, nearly killedhimself when taking a catch. Dave steadiedhimself, knelt on the ground, held out hishands, but unfortunately had forgot toshout "Dave Clinton", or "mine" or "KingNebuchanezzar". Will Webster (who hadshouted "Will" and "mine" but not "KingNebuchanezzar") steamed into him at highspeed, hitting Dave like a train taking out a

Absinthe Drinker of the Year - Jim Scarratt- manager of Theatr Clwyd.
So another season over and an increasedlevel of irritation for more partners andwives for yet more time spent by theirspouses standing in a field and hangingaround real ale pubs. A long sufferingpartner of a fairly elderly cricket player inMaeshafn (who has the misfortune ofperhaps being the most idle as well) hasnow started emailing me rude & insultingmessages cursing the day that I formedMaeshafn cricket club. This is very unfair. The club was in factformed by Richard Jones of Aberduna -
former Ruthin 1st team captain and sheepfarmer, Rhun Jones - the village drunk,Derek Parsons - sheep rustler and Mike &Audrey, formerly of the Miners Arms,Maeshafn. Anyone wishing to express theirfeelings of gratitude for removing anumber of males from Maeshafn andsurrounding areas every Saturday for 6months should contact one or all of theabove.

In my Nature Notes last month Ilamented the absence of butterflies. No sooner had I sent my notes in,than we had an 'Indian Summer' andout came the butterflies to add latesummer colour to the garden. Redadmirals, small tortoiseshells, commas, peacocks and 'cabbage'whites competed with latebumblebees for nectar, on any gardenplants still in flower. Thesebutterflies had probably gone intohibernation but were awakened bythe warm weather and enticed out tobuild up further body-fat to sustainthem through the winter months. However, with the onset of the colderweather of this week, I expect theywill have returned to theirhibernacula and we are unlikely tosee them again until next late-February or March. Famous lastwords? There is no denying that autumn iswith us and winter approaches. Treesare fast taking on their autumnalhues and extra colour is added towoods and hedgerows by fruits suchas orange rowan berries, blue-blacksloes, crimson hawthorns and scarletrose hips. A blackbird or mistlethrush sometimes tries to takeownership of a tree or bush, ladenwith fruit, and chases away any otherbirds that try to cash in on thebounty. It sometimes succeeds for atime but fieldfares can quickly rob itof its food store by sheer weight ofnumbers. These Scandinavianthrushes are now with us along withtheir redwing cousins. They startedarriving on the east coast about twoweeks ago and have quickly spreadwestwards to most parts by now. Isaw my first flock of redwings passingover on the 12th of the month. They
often migrate by night and cansometimes be heard passing overheadas they communicate with each otherwith a single call note. Although mostof the redwings we see come fromScandinavia, a distinct (slightly largerand darker) subspecies breeds inIceland and sometimes winters on ourwest coast.A Knopper gall from an oak tree wasdisplayed on the BBC 'Autumn Watch'program. These galls are caused by asmall wasp called Andricusquercuscalicis which have aninteresting life cycle. Parthenogenicfemales(that is they can producefertile eggs without mating) lay eggsin the male catkins of Turkeyoak(Quercus cerris) in early spring toproduce tiny galls. From these gallsemerge male and female wasps whichmate. The female then lays eggs inthe female flowers of Pedunculate oak(Q. Robur). When the grubs hatch, the tree is induced to produce richtissue on which the grubs feed. Thistissue continues to grow and formsthe large galls which can envelop theacorns. In the autumn the galls fall tothe ground and over winter the grubsdevelop into the adult parthenogenicfemales which fly to Turkey oaks torestart the life cycle. This wasp only arrived in Britain inabout 1950 from continental Europeand spread across the country. In1979 I well remember it had apopulation explosion and mostPedunculate oaks were infected.Uninformed newspaper hacks of thetime were predicting that there wouldbe no acorns in future years and itwould cause the demise of the oaktree in Britain. Guess what - it neverhappened.
