4. Entry points: some points for discussion

1. Where does the initiative stand?

Almost half way through first 1000 days…

• There has been progress in SDG implementation

• But speed of progress needs to be stepped up

• Slower take up at local level

• Some programmes seeking to help with this

Examples of

initiatives:

UNSDSN Cities

Guide; US cities

scorecard

2. Examples of what cities are doing

• Mapping assessments of targets and indicators

(e.g. Medellin c.70% of indicators for relevant SDGs)

• Implementation plans (e.g. Medellin holding

consultations with wider stakeholders this year)

“The SDGs provide an opportunity to inform policy & priorities

using evidence rather than short-term political interests”

Interview with local government official

3. Some of the challenges

• Feasibility/relevance/prioritisation of targets

• Complexity of monitoring framework and

availability of data/analytical capacities

• Institutional challenges and finance

(working across-sectors; government levels)

4. Entry points for DeLoG:

Points for discussion

• 2018: opportunity as countries report on SDG 11

• Raising awareness/exchanging knowledge on early

stages of implementation from members’ work

• Provide examples of good practice/evidence on

key issues for implementers
