LOVE IDIOMS: EXPLANATIONS & EXAMPLES

To have a crush: A romantic infatuation. Example: Juan has a crush on Lisa. He wants to ask her out next week.

Puppy love: Love between young people—not usually taken seriously. Example: Sofia thinks she will marry her boyfriend, but she is only 16. I think it is just puppy love.

Head over heels: To be very much in love. Example: I can see that he is head over heels in love with her.

To get hitched: To get married. (“Hitch” means to

connect or fasten; for example, a plow can be hitched to a horse.) Another idiom meaning “to get married” is to tie the knot. Example: Kim and Franco got hitched in San Diego last year.

To pop the question: To propose marriage. Another idiom meaning “to propose marriage” is to get down on one knee. Example: Sara had been waiting for five years when Mario finally popped the question.
