Some lessons I learned teaching and working in game development: for Educators

Focus on the “why”

the “how” is cheap…

the “why” is still expensive!

Some lessons I learned teaching and working in game development: for Educators

Victory through small successes

“A great belt buckle is better than a mediocre character”

Help your students to do less, better!

Todays recruiters only need to see two maybe three top quality pieces of work. A whole lot of mediocrity will not help a student achieve their career goal

Some lessons I learned teaching and working in game development: for Educators

Require professional portfolio quality deliverables in class

Fight to stay current with the blistering pace of change in this rapidly evolving field

Some lessons I learned teaching and working in game development: for Educators

(Even though I work for epic games)

“Constantly remind your students to be good artist and designers”

It becomes all to easy to get caught up in the tech and forget to make good art and design choices

Leverage those foundational skills, particularly at the end of a project during the polish phase

To recap...

Continue to Teach professional tools!

Remember... "There is no license to practice art and design“

Yes, naturally teach your students how to do things, but make certain they understand “why”.

Choice management is a key ingredient of success in game development.

Thank You!
