Main page of the Database (http://xiaobao.uni-hd.de).

Basic Data view of a single newspaper, listing, for example, “Founding date” and “End of publication date”, name of the founder (if known), a short summary of the newspapers’ content, and showing three sample issues (one from the beginning of the publication, one from the middle of that time span, and one from the end).

The content of each publication is described on six sub-pages. Here the founding statement and an editor’s note are available.

On this subpage, characteristic illustrations and advertisements are displayed and annotated.

In addition to the newspapers themselves, the literary works included in the newspapers can be searched or browsed on a separate page: “Related publications.”

This screenshot shows the result for a search for “漫畫” (manhua). Hits are displayed by newspaper and section, the search term is highlighted and displayed with its textual context.

Another page allows to browse all images in the database.

Images are shown with a set of metadata, including caption, image type, date, comment, keywords and a link back to the publication. They can be viewed either in full size (enlarging only the picture), or in context, showing the full page with the image (cf. screenshot below).

Names of persons or groups of persons are also recorded and can be searched or browsed on a separate page.
