Grand Knight’s Message
Sometimes we take good things for granted. One
of those came to light on Saturday, July 26th, at the Dis-
trict 87 meeting lead by our District Deputy Pat Conway
and his comments were reinforced by our State Audit
Committee Chairman Roy Rabenaldt. The meeting was
just about to conclude when our District Deputy lifted
Council #6065’s Directory up and started compliment-
ing how much information is contained in the Directory
and what a wonderful tool it was to the Council and to himself. He continued by
reading off the Table of Contents and saying this was the best Directory he had
seen and that all, not just District 87 Councils, but all Knights of Columbus
Councils should have something like this for their Brothers and for their District
Deputies and the Diocesan Officers.
After the Meeting was over, Rabenaldt cornered me and continued the
praises of the Directory and embellished its contents.
All and all, I learned much from the meeting, but I also was extremely
proud of our Council and how good we are received by our Council District,
Diocese and the State Officers.
And we all know who has put this Directory together from its inception
until now and that is Rudy Profaizer. Brother Rudy, thank you for the Directory
and all you do for our Council.

Record Attendance Highlights Council’s
Eighth BINGO KNIGHT
More than 175 parishioners came with high hopes to Council 6065's
BINGO KNIGHT at St. Mark's Cafetorium on the evening of July 26th.... and 11
of them walked away with some very nice prizes, headed by Robert Rossato, who
won the Blackout game and took home the $600.00 VISA gift card.
The event, which was the eighth
sponsored by Council 6065, benefitted
many of the organizations and events at
St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic
Church. Final figures have not yet
been determined, but an estimate of
$5300 NET was being bandied about as
the Mainsail went to press.
Again, this BINGO KNIGHT
was under the direction of project
chairman John Patterson and his wife,
Rose, and assisted by countless other
members from the Council and the La-
dies Auxiliary.... and they will be recognized as this story progresses.
He's here, he's there, he's everywhere....
Bingo Knight project chairman John Patter-
With apologies to all, we want to acknowledge two names that were omitted from the original BINGO
KNIGHT. From the Ladies Auxiliary, Mary Ann Schumacher, and from Council 6065, Ron Vehige. We are
sorry for the oversight, but with SO many people to keep track of, this invariably happens. If you look carefully at
the updated version that accompanies this edition of The Mainsail, you will notice the corrections.

But for now, let's get back to the winners, and more importantly,
the DONORS who made all of this possible. And before we even got started, the
participants were treated to a special donation from Raising Cane's Chicken Fin-
gers, right across the street from STM, who brought over "baskets full of fin-
gers"... and they didn't last long!
The evening got underway with a prayer, led by our Pastor, Father Cliff
Smith, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a singing of "America the Beautiful, led by
Steve Glatz. After that, Master of Ceremonies Ron Schoof reviewed all the rules
and games were officially underway.
The first game of the evening was Texas "T" and JoAnn Witmer was the
lucky winner of a prize basket that contained dining gift cards from The Allen
Wicker's Public House, Casa Mama Comida Casera, and The Lon-
doner. JoAnn will also be easily recognized in her Texas Rangers' attire as the
basket also contained two Ranger T-shirts and a Rangers' windbreaker, along with
a Rangers' blanket and rolling cooler.
Michelle Vice took home the prize in game two.... "C", which could have
stood for "Catholic" or "Church" or "Charity"....or perhaps even "Cheer for the
Cowboys" as her prizes included a deluxe Dallas Cowboys' zippered jacket as
well as dining gift cards from Cafe de France and Chuy's Mexican Food.
Before the first number could be called, our pastor, Father Cliff, delivered a prayer and
a gentle admonition to "play fair, no cheating" and those remarks drew a chuckle from
master of ceremonies Ron Schoof.

The third game was "X marks the spot" and Terry Butler was the very ex-
cited winner, exclaiming the she "never wins anything", but in this case, she won
big. Her prize basket included enough dining gift cards that she won't have to
cook much next week..... Dee Lincoln Steak & Burger Bar, Frankie's Mexican
Cuisine, Outback Steakhouse, and The Allen Wicker's Public House.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend, and even though Council 6065 could not
spring for a real diamond, being the first to make one on your Bingo card would
make you the winner of game four... and that's exactly what Bryan Thompson
did. So the next time you see Bryan out and about, notice the Texas Rangers'
look as he could be wearing his Rangers' T shirt, or polo shirt, or even his wind-
breaker (although with this heat, it is doubtful that will happen before Octo-
ber). He might also be wearing his Rangers' baseball cap and drinking from one
of his Rangers' insulated cups, which he carried around in his Rangers' rolling
cooler. And he won't need his Rangers' blanket just yet as he goes out to eat and
enjoy his dining gift cards at either McAlister's Deli or On the Border.
The fifth game required the winner to form an "H" on the card.... and the
winner might surely think of "Heaven" when reviewing the great package of
prizes. And for Carol Tropea, that was the case. Her prize basket included a
Dallas Cowboys' "hoodie" sweatshirt and a Texas Rangers' windbreaker....
Council 6065 could not possibly have a successful Bingo Knight were it not for the Ladies
Auxiliary, who were there from mid-afternoon until closing time, providing refreshments for
all those in attendance. Shown (l-r) are Dorothy Dietz, Martha Bernatis, Cheryl Leo, Tanya
Olson, and Karin Kuglin. Just to keep the record straight, Tanya is the daughter of Brother
Knight Greg Olson. Also assisting in all the preparations by the Ladies Auxiliary was Mary
Ann Schumacher, who was not pictured.

so depending on the season, she could wear one or the other when going
to IHOP, Katy Trail Icehouse, or The Londoner for breakfast, lunch, and then
dinner. All this driving around might mean she needs an oil change, compliments
of Al's Auto in Plano.
After all this excitement, it was time for an intermission. During this time
as well as prior to the start of play, Pete Maurer (also known as "The Council
Beggar"), was visiting each and every table to insure that hopefully everyone in
attendance received a prize of some sort. Armed with gift certificates for free ap-
petizers cards from area restaurants such as On the Border, laMadeleine, Cotton
Patch Cafe, Genghis Grill, Cafe deFrance, The Corner Bakery, and Logan's
Road House as well as several Studio Movie Grill passes, the intention was that
everyone could go home with the "I won something" feeling.
The action cranked up again with game six, the "double-connecting straight
line Bingo"..... and before long David Nilsen achieved it and walked away with a
very nice package of prizes that would enable him to eat and go to the movies
without ever leaving Plano. Included were dining gift cards
from Fuddruckers, Spaghetti Warehouse, and The Allen Wickers Public
House and free passes to the Studio Movie Grill. OK, so we fudged a bit.... he
may have to "meander" into Richardson to enjoy his Razzoo's dinner (or catch the
Plano location on the Tollway), but what's a few miles down the road for a great
and FREE meal?
Game seven was a quick one, with Four Corners being the Bingo require-
ment and it did not take much more than a dozen numbers before Barbara Rodda
was the winner. Her prize package included dining cards to Babe's Chicken
Dinner House, Lombardi Family Concepts, McAlister's Deli, Patrizio,
and Shady's Burger Joint.
To win game eight, a small frame around the FREE space had to be made,
and for Veronica Marques, it meant she was taking home a gift basket that in-
cluded seven different area restaurants.....featuring cuisine from around the
world. Frankie's Mexican Cuisine, then the Greek Isles, followed by "down
under" at Outback Steakhouse. Stay overseas for some Italian at The Spaghetti
Warehouse, then mosey over to the UK for The Londoner and Ye Shire Tavern,
then get back to our neck of the woods for another taste of Mexican at On the
Border.
Game nine was the "large" picture frame, along the four outside edges of
your Bingo card. It took a lot of numbers to fulfill this requirement and with
many players saying "I need just one more number", it was Jill Heydrick who got
it done. Her prize package included dining cards from BJ's Brewhouse, The
Woolworth-Mexican Cuisine, Boomer Jack's, Steve Field's Steak & Lobster

Grill, and Babe's Chicken Dinner House. Cap off one of your evenings with a
movie at Studio Movie Grill.... and then after al that driving around, it might be
time for an oil change fromAl's Auto in Plano.
Now we are getting close..... just game 10 to go before the "biggie". To
win this basket, a large PLUS sign needed to be formed... and Harold Antao was
the winner. His package included Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers' shirts and
caps and then four nice restaurants to be seen in them. The dining gift cards were
from Love and War in Texas, Marcus Cafe, Outback Steakhouse, and The
Londoner in Addison.
And then it all came down to BLACKOUT.... and as you already know.....
Robert Rossato was the winner. And then it was all OVER, except for the clean-
ing up and getting ready for the next BINGO KNIGHT.
Giving everyone involved the proper credit is always tough because in-
variably someone gets left out... but here's hoping:
The aforementioned John and Rose Patterson, as well as Fred and Karin
Kuglin and Ron and Barbara Schoof, who handle most of the "details, publicity,
venue, and packaging" for BINGO KNIGHT. But what would our event be if it
were not for the "beggars"? They are many and talented and persistent, headed
by "Chief Beggar" Pete, who this time was delighted to enlist several Brother
Knights to take over some of his donors. And what a success they were.... with
Aaron Baldwin and Jerry Lenihan stepping into the arena and not only

successfully getting those from Pete's list to contribute, but bringing in NEW do-
nors as well. In addition, Bill Ptacek took some from Pete's list and also brought
in his own favorites. Rudy Profaizer, Fred Kuglin, Matt Flanagan, Mark Hro-
malik, and Don Lauterbach continued to get their "regulars" to donate. Chuck
Schumacher again donated the Cowboys's and Rangers' prizes.
A very special thanks goes out to the Broussard family for their donation of
the signage that makes BINGO KNIGHT look great. With their "professional"
expertise and support, our signs and advertising materials look awesome.
As mentioned above, the Ladies Auxiliary provided all the support we
could ask for in getting all the "snacks" ready for the parishioners and handling so
much of the "set-up and clean-up" work that is necessary. Among those from the
Ladies Auxiliary were Karin Kuglin, Dorothy Dietz, Martha Bernatis, Cheryl Leo,
Connie Maurer, and Tanya Olson.
The bar tending team of Jim Rizzo, Blake Thompson, and Mike Zeleski
made sure that everyone who wanted something refreshing to drink got it.... and
with a smile and a bit of cheerful banter. As always, our "stellar" numbers team
of John Wheeler and Phil Reinkemeyer, assisted by new "trainee" Jerry Lenihan,
called out the Bingo numbers, and even if they might have "missed" yours, they
could only call out what the machine "spit" out.... and that's that!
GK Bill Butcher (right) is all smiles as he learns that two of our Council's "official
and TABC certified" bartenders are on the job. Jim Rizzo (center) and Blake Thompson
were busy all night dispensing beer, wine, sodas, and water.

The Council would especially like to acknowledge and thank our Table
Sponsors: John R. Kraft/State Farm, Jack Ternan, Lloyd Hasley, Jake Fleischer,
David Sanchez, Mike and Martha Bernatis, Greg Fisher family, Ron and Barbara
Schoof, Fred and Karin Kuglin, John Patterson III family, Chuck Schumacher,
Catherine Hogan, and Mark Daus. Special thanks also go out to our local
Kroger and Tom Thumb stores for the generous food and beverage donations, to
Steve and Cindy Cosgrove for their Texas Rangers' ticket package gift, to Blake
Thompson for his donation of the fruits and vegetables on the snack table, and
Anthony Construction Company for their continued support.
The following members from Council 6065 were involved in various ways
and might not have been mentioned above.... so here goes: Mike Bernatis, Karl
Kuglin, Greg Fisher, David Watson, Robert Vickers, Bill Butcher, John Vasquez,
Roger Knott, Greg Olson, Rudy Profaizer, Armando Guerra, Stuart Shahan, Ron
Vehige, and Randy LeGrand. Last but not least, all the happiness and hard work
were recorded for posterity by our esteemed and beloved Council photographer,
Alex Hernandez, and his work can be seen accompanying this story.
And now.... set your calendars for our next BINGO KNIGHT.... Saturday,
Nov. 15th, where we will salute and honor our Military, past, present, and future.

Lest anyone forget that this was a Knights of

to welcome any men of the parish who might
want to become a member of Council 6065.

Santa Maria Council #6065 Wins Award
In Plano's Independence Day Parade
Joined by the Fourth Degree Color Corps from Christopher Columbus As-
sembly #6622 and representatives from the new Columbian Squires Ronald
Fossier Circle #5726, the men of Santa Maria Council #6065 represented local
Catholics in the Plano Independence Day Parade on the Fourth of July.
The Council was awarded the Spirit of America Award by the judges.
The Knights have been a recurring presence in the parade, which is spon-
sored by the Early Lions Club. This year‚ the KofC entry was led by a banner
proclaiming "One Nation Under God" and was carried by members of our new
Columbian Squires circle, followed by the Fourth Degree Color Corps, under the
leadership of Color Corps Commander SK Bill Ptacek. Following them were the
men of Council #6065, displaying the banners and passing out candy to the chil-
dren along the parade route. This in turn was followed by a float featuring the
Statue of Liberty, standing sentinel over the children of the Knights, who were
gathered around "Betsy Ross" (Karie Mitchell), who worked on her 13-star flag as
the float proceeded along the route to the cheers and greetings of many

onlookers.
Everyone seemed to agree this year our entry was a big success and a lot of
fun to do. The people really seemed to get a kick out of seeing "Betsy Ross" in
the parade, said the Council's parade chairman, PGK Paul Mitchell. "We will be
back out for the Christmas parade and we are already planning an even bigger en-
try," he added.
"The 4th of July Parade was a success", said Grand Knight Bill Butcher,
"and seeing the spectators along the Parade Route, waving their flags, smiling and
returning greetings of 'Happy Fourth' made the day even more special."

1st Annual K of C Crawdad Feed
And just like that, the 1st annual KofC Crawdad feed
has come and gone. On May 2nd, 13 brave souls gath-
ered at the house of Michael Zeleski to participate in the
feast. Being so close to Louisiana, I was not short on re-
ceiving advice on how to cook crawdads. Bob Navarrete
was there for me the whole time, asking me if I had
things under control and have I ever “cooked” crawdads
before. I told him what could be so hard about it. Take
them out of the freezer and put them in the microwave
for a few minutes, what could be easier? Bob nearly-
fainted. Apparently, you do not kid around with people
who have ties to "Loosiana" when it comes to mudbugs.
Like any good retired Army officer, I quickly delegated
the task to someone who has experience in the task at hand and that brought Blake
Thompson into the picture. I figured anyone who owns an 80-quart cooking pot
must know a thing about "doing up" some crayfish, crawfish, or crawdads, what-
ever you want to call them!
The day started early as Blake showed up to set
up the cooking facility. When he started up the
burner to heat the water, I thought a Chinook was
lifting off from my backyard. Those were some rag-
ing flames!!!
Once we got the “furnance” going, the first task at
hand was to “wash” the bait. Once again, this is a
huge cooler. I’m not sure what Blake does for a liv-
ing, but everything he owns is huge. I think I could
have laid down in this cooler. This picture shows 30
pounds of our dinner, which is only half of what we
consumed that night.
Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 August 2014
27 http://KofC-6065.org
Now, I’ve consumed some crawdads over my life but these things were like
baby lobsters. Some of these fish were big enough that we were able to get meat
out of their claws. If a guy didn’t know better, he would have thought Blake got
them from Nebraska, where everything is bigger.
Needless to say, Blake did a great job of ordering and getting the finest quality
food. Not only were 60 pounds of crayfish served, but the group also consumed
10 pounds of potatoes, 10 pounds of sweet corn and five pounds of mushrooms.
I was worried if we were were going to have enough because Blake’s philosophy
was that he had to taste test everything. It usually went something like, “one for
me, one for the group of 12”
From left to right, going around the back of the table, Pat Haney and his wife,
Patricia, Wilma Navarrete, Vincent Liberto, (not pictured his wife, Betsy), Chuck
Neubecker, Bob Navarrete, Candy and Bill Butcher, followed by John Vasquez with
his guest, Susan Edwards. (Notice Blake slaving away in the background trying to
keep everybody fed). Special thanks to Blake for bringing in the equipment, coordi-
nating the food and cooking it.

Squires Improve St. Mark’s Curb Appeal
The Squires were busy giving St. Marks curb appeal on Saturday, May 24.
The Squires - Avery Bynoe, Jac Bartz, Justus Bartz, Josh Peacock, and Joseph Al-
len, along with adults - Todd Bartz, Mark Peacock, Michael Bynoe, Don Allen,
spent the day digging in the dirt.
They removed old flowers from in front of the church and the fountain at
Alma and 15th and a few other places and replanted with new flowers to make the
Church look good.
The property definitely looks better thanks to the efforts of the Squires.

Men’s Conference held at Prince of Peace
Catholic Church in Plano, TX. Knights of
Columbus Council 6065 were once again
Bronze Sponsors for the conference and
have been since its conception in 2012.
The North Texas Catholic Men’s Con-
ference is an annual gathering of Catholic
men which is coordinated by a lay ministry
known as the Catholic Brothers for Christ
(CBFC) with the following goals:
Motivate Catholic men to build the body of Christ by uniting as brothers,
being a living example of the Gospel in all areas of their lives, and facilitat-
ing faith-building programs in our community.
Create ongoing partnerships with the Bishop and priests in the DFW Dio-
cese.
Promote collaboration with other Catholic organizations with an emphasis
on men’s spiritual needs.
This year’s conference featured dynamic speakers of Father Casey
(EWTN), Tim Staples (Catholic Answers), Al Kresta (Kresta in the Afternoon
Catholic Radio host) and Doug Barry (EWTN, Life on the Rock). Their talks in-
spired Catholic men of faith with topics that were designed to promote the spiri-
tual growth of men enabling them to become spiritual leaders in all facets of their
daily lives. This conference proved to be the opportunity to encounter Our Lord
Jesus by way of the Eucharistic Adoration, Benediction, the Rosary, Reconcilia-
tion and celebration of the Mass.
Set aside 7 February 2015 and plan to attend the 4th Annual North Texas
Men’s Conference to be held at the Hurst Conference Center in Hurst, TX. For
further information, please contact SK Michael Zeleski or check out the North
Texas Catholic Men’s Conference website at http://www.ntxcmc.org/.

2014-15 KC Directory Coming Out Soon
The often-imitated, never-duplicated, always-useful "official" KC Member-
ship Directory and Handbook will be ready for distribution at the August business
meeting, according to project chairman and publisher, Rudy Profaizer.
The latest edition of the directory will be the most complete ever, contain-
ing invaluable information to assist Council 6065 members in almost every aspect
of their membership in the Knights of Columbus. More than 260 members of
the Council will be listed, complete with all their contact information, updated as
best as possible.
In addition, there are separate photo pages for the Council officers, Ladies
Auxiliary officers, and our Columbian Squires Ronald Fossier Circle #5726.
An extensive review of all our Council's projects and the chairmen are in-
cluded as well as information on just where our charity dollars go. Each member
who is a veteran is also noted. Several pages are delegated to recognize the past
Grand Knights of the Council as well as the award winners, all the way back to
1997.
And if you have ever gotten "lost" with the words while the group is sing-
ing the opening or closing "odes", your Directory and Handbook will solve that
problem, too. There are pages dedicated to STM clergy and our seminarians as
well as information regarding the duties of each officer in the Council, how to ar-
range to have an STM priest provide anointing of the sick and/or last rites, and a
list of all our deceased Brother Knights and/our their spouses.
Last but not least, there is a very detailed "History" of the Knights of Co-
lumbus and Council 6065.
And now for the good news..... this magnificent and highly desirable publi-
cation is yours for FREE.... you don't even have to pay "separate shipping and
handling", as is so common on TV infomercials! Yes, Brother
Knights.... FREE means FREE.... all you have to do is attend the August meeting
to get your own FREE copy. They will also be distributed at future business
meetings....or you can contact Rudy directly
at rudyprofaizer@verizon.net or 972-424-7326 to make arrangements to get
your own FREE....yes, I said FREE copy.
Please do keep this in mind, Rudy does NOT deliver; however you can em-
ploy the "expedited delivery service" of PETECAN Delivery Company for a
nominal fee (subject to mileage charges) and get home delivery. Keep in mind,
dear Brother Knights, that with gas at almost $3.69 a gallon, you are looking at a
$5.00 bill going down the drain in a hurry. So the best suggestion is to attend a
business meeting and pick up your own FREE....yes, FREE copy!

Council 6065 Announces Plans
For 2015 Entertainment Passbook Sales
For the first time in more than 20 years, Council 6065 will be taking a dif-
ferent approach to selling the annual Entertainment Passbook, according to long-
time chairman Rudy Profaizer.
Although Council members will NOT be selling the book after Masses at
St. Mark, the books will be available at the parish office for public sale. Books
will be available at Council business meetings for a few months, starting with the
August meeting. However, through a special arrangement, anyone who pur-
chases a 2015 edition for $30.00 will receive a free 2014 edition, which will be
valid until the end of December-2014. So if there were some "favorite" restau-
rants that you have already used up in 2014, here is a chance to get a free 2014
book and go to that restaurant one more time on the "Buy One, Get One" free pro-
gram. And, the new book will also contain the "Mobile App", which allows you
to access coupons from other areas of the country while you are traveling.
For Brother Knights who are interested in getting their own "two-fer" deal,
please contact Rudy Profaizer (972-424-7326) or Roger Knott (972-516-4955) to
get your two books....for only $30.00. Feel free to buy more than one 2015 edi-
tion because they still make great gifts.

Knights of Columbus Council 6065 sponsors
Lighthouse Catholic Media Kiosk
At the September 2013 General Membership meeting, Council 6065 ap-
proved the purchase and maintaining of a Lighthouse Catholic Media Kiosk to be
placed in the Narthex of St Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. The Kiosk was
ordered and opened for operation with a kick-off during the first weekend of Oc-
tober, 2013.
The use of the Kiosk has been approved by Fr. Clifford Smith and is en-
dorsed by several bishops, including our Bishop Farrell's endorsement of "With
this letter, I recommend to all faithful of the Diocese of Dallas the CDs made
available through Lighthouse Catholic Media." St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St
Jude currently enjoy the use of their Lighthouse Media stations as well as more
than 5,000 other parishes.
The Kiosk is stocked with CDs and books from well-known Catholic au-
thors on a various range of religious topics and are provided in both English and
Spanish. Initially the Kiosk was purchased to displaying product only on one
side, but after only a few months it was quickly realized that the back side should
also be utilized. The Kiosk displays 32 different titles of CDs (both English and
Spanish), 10 different booklet titles as well as eight different book titles.
Since the Kiosk is K of C property, the responsibility of its maintenance
and up keep falls onto the Council's Warden. At the time of the acquisition, SK
Michael Zeleski was the Warden and assumed the responsibility of ordering and
restocking the media. Even though Mike has moved on to the office of Chancel-
lor, he, with the help of his wife, Linda, continues to maintain the Kiosk. As of
the end of June 2014, the following amount of products have been distributed via
the Kiosk: 1,995 English CDs, 641 English books, 666 English booklets, 1,006
Spanish CDs and 104 Spanish books, for a total of 4,412 pieces of media. All of
the materials in the Kiosk are free to parishioners with only an "in-kind" donation
requested.

While currently only CDs, booklets and books are displayed, Lighthouse
Catholic Media offers an array of other opportunities for the parish to grow it is
faith. Several other benefits come with the purchase of Lighthouse Catholic Me-
dia program such as Parish Subscription Clubs, where parishioners can join "CD
of the Month", “Download of the Month", "Truth Be Told, MP3" and "Military
Download of the Month (free)" clubs. The Council receives a percentage of these
proceeds depending on the type of membership established (5%-10%).
For any additional information contact Mike Zeleski at 214-562-3492.
In an effort to enhance the lives of parishioners of St. Mark's, Council 6065 has
placed a kiosk in the Bethany Narthex to provide CDs and reading material about
our Catholic faith. The unit is designed to be self-sustaining, funded by donations
from those who take materials from it.

Council’s Involvement with Ukraine
Many fellow knights have asked me about Ukraine and the situation there.
First a little background for the new knights that are not familiar with our Coun-
cil’s longtime support of organizations there. Since 2001 the Council has sup-
ported a seminarian in formation at the Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv, Ukraine. A
total of four seminarians have been helped, one at a time. Since 2003 the Council
has also supported the Miles Jesu congregation, which operates a boys orphanage
and a girls orphanage in Ukraine. Currently there are 26 boys and 15 girls.
The Ukrainian Catholic Church (UGCC) was an illegal organization while
Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. In 1991 Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church
came out of the underground and has since flourished – about 4 million Eastern
rite Catholics and 1 million Latin rite Catholics.
Starting in November 2013, large demonstrations occurred in Kiev,
Ukraine, protesting the corruption in the government and then President
Yanukovych rejecting closer cooperation with the European Union, instead choos-
ing closer ties with Russia. It should be noted that historically Russia has been a
very unfriendly neighbor, at times evil, to those parts of Ukraine, which it occu-
pied (West Ukraine usually belonged to Austria-Hungary or Poland and had much
better experience with them).
There is much disinformation in the media about Ukraine. Much is made of
Russian language speakers. Until Ukrainian independence in 1991 students were
taught Russian in school and Ukrainian language was forbidden. Therefore it is
only natural for older Ukrainians to speak Russian. It does not indicate a prefer-
ence for the country or government of Russia (e.g., the founders of the American
Republic spoke English, but were not pro-English government).
With regard to religion, Ukrainian Catholics and Ukrainian Orthodox were
very unhappy with the previous Ukrainian government. They supported the over-
throw of that government. Catholic and Orthodox Masses were celebrated in
Kiev's Independence Square until the government thugs destroyed the Worship
tent. Priests from Holy Spirit seminary and Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU)
took part. Tragically one UCU lecturer, Bohdan Solchanyk, was killed there.
What does the future hold? The election of the new President Porochenko
on May 25th appears to be a good sign. As far as I know, he is not been involved
with corruption. He built a chocolate company from scratch, named Roshen. I
have sampled his company’s products and they have passed the taste test. I think
that Putin may have miscalculated. His takeover of Crimea and his threats on East
Ukraine, directly via troops on the border and indirectly via soldiers without in-
signia, many actually Russians, taking over government buildings there have actu-

ally driven many Ukrainians closer together.
The organizations and people that we support are in western Ukraine and
not in immediate danger since they are far from the terrorists’ actions. Of course,
if Russia mounts a major invasion of Ukraine, all Ukrainians will be at risk.
I would like to quote Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Archbishop of Kiev, “We in
Ukraine wish to be good neighbors of Russia. We are not your enemies and we
have no aggressive intentions. St. John Paul II will protect us and protect the
world from new iron curtains and new Berlin walls."
Attached are some photographs of some students and some of the orphans
so you can put faces to the people that we have helped. Please pray for the people
that we support there. Thank you.

Ladies Auxiliary Elects 2014-2015 Officers
The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary elected new officers at their
June 5, 2014 General Meeting and then joined Council 6065 at their annual Instal-
lation banquet to install their officers. Congratulations are in order for the follow-
ing officers:
As President, Mary Ann Schumacher brings a warm, caring, and positive
attitude to the office. She has been diligent and successful in recruiting new
members as well as assisting our past president throughout the past two years. We
look forward to her fresh ideas and enthusiasm.
Judy Ahr, as Vice President, has been an active loyal member from the very
beginning. She has served as Recording Secretary and been on the Board of Trus-
tees for the past two years.
Wilma Navarrete was elected to the position of Secretary for a second term.
We welcome her strong administrative experience to keep accurate accounts of
our meetings, activities and projects.
To round out the Executive Board, Nancy Schumacher was elected Treas-
urer. Nancy possesses strong administrative skills that are needed to maintain a
sound budget that gives our Auxiliary a solid financial footing.
Alice Alt (3rd year) joins the Board of Trustee with Martha Bernatis (2nd
year) and Dorothy Dietz (1st year).
Our new slate of officers is committed to supporting our guiding principles
and by-laws. They bring renewed energy that will contribute to continued growth
and sustainability of our Auxiliary. We invite all wives, mothers, and daughters of
Knights of Council 6065 members to join us in our upcoming meetings and ac-
tivities.
The new officers of the Ladies Auxiliary were installed in June to serve the 2014-15 fraternal
year. Shown (l-r) are Mary Ann Schumacher (president), Judy Ahr (vice-president), Wilma
Navarrete (secretary), Nancy Schumacher (treasurer), Dorothy Dietz (trustee), Martha Bernatis
(trustee), and Alice Alt (trustee).

Ladies Auxiliary honors Sr. Esther
With Appreciation Dinner and Gifts
Earlier this Spring, the Knights and the Ladies Auxiliary of Council #6065
gathered before our meetings for a Potluck Dinner in the Great Hall to bid Sr.
Esther M. Guerrero, M.C.D.P., a fond farewell as she left to take over the position
as Mother Superior in San Antonio, at her orders' Mother House. A lot of great
food was shared by all. Before dinner, Alice Alt, president of the Ladies Auxil-
iary, presented Sr. Esther with a corsage and Bill Butcher, Grand Knight of Coun-
cil #6065, presented Sister with a certificate of appreciation and a check from the
Knights.
After we finished our dinner and went to our meetings, the Ladies Auxiliary
presented Sr. Esther a wall hanging with the Prayer of St. Francis, which was
made by Terry Reisinger. We also gave Sr. Esther a card and check.
We now wish Mother Superior Esther God’s blessings in her new role in
the Church.
