STAY INVOLVED WITH RELATED CLUBS

While in college, I was the creative intern for United Adworkers, a club dedicated to the Milwaukee advertising community.

That internship got me another internship at BVK, a Milwaukee advertising agency.

Now after returning to Milwaukee five years later, I am on the United Adworkers Board.

All connections and local organizations are valuable.

BUILD YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE THROUGH THESE SOCIAL CHANNELS

SlideShare • LinkedIn • Twitter • Facebook • Blog • Flickr • YouTube/Vimeo

Utilize your design skills to create unique, branded social media channels.

GOOGLE YOURSELF

• It’s the first place potential employers go to find more information about you.

• What are the top search results for your name?

• What content is on those links?

• Social Media channels give you the opportunity to create your brand online.

• Top results are typically your social media channels.

ENGAGE IN CONVERSATIONS

• Engage in conversations.

• Twitter is one of the best ways to network and meet new people.

• Utilize Twitter platforms, such as Hootsuite, to follow industry keywords, organizations you’re interested in, and companies. Engage in conversations on these topics.

• Make it a point each day to engage in a Twitter conversation with someone other than posting information.

• Expand your network. Find/Follow people of interest to you.

GET CREATIVE. PLAY WITH SOCIAL MEDIA.

• Every day new social media tools are being created, opening up creative opportunities to find ways to utilize them for your personal branding.

• Spend 10 minutes each day browsing blogs, such as Mashable and TechCrunch.

• Use Twitter to see what your network is talking about.

• Play. It’s very important to not be hesitant on experimenting with new social media tools.

CONCEPT 1:

BLOG: Today, it’s a must to have a personal website/blog.

Your blog plays as the social hub where all of your content lives and all your social channels lead back to.

Share industry knowledge, interior design portfolio, and engage with your community through online polls, questions, etc.

CONCEPT 1:

FACEBOOK: Create a fan page for your personal portfolio or business

Facebook fan pages can serve as your professional blog platform to share industry thoughts, showcase your interior design portfolio and promote your work.

By choosing your page’s vanity URL, you will build SEO for your name and business. Choose a name wisely, since you’re unable to change your vanity URL.

TWITTER: Choose a Twitter handle wisely

Promote your Facebook fan page / blog

Share industry thoughts and engage with other professionals/students

Talk about what you love…but don’t get too personal by sharing your every move

What not to do on Twitter:

Don’t be a salesperson – people will unfollow you quickly

CONCEPT 1: CASE STUDIES

LINKEDIN: How to make yourself stand out

Share content from your professional website/blog and Facebook fan page

Utilize various applications to showcase your work. Ex. SlideShare & Wordpress

Connect with professionals and students you network with, in-person or online

Follow companies you are interested in, to stay up-to-date on recent news

FLICKR: How to make yourself stand out

Photo portfolio of your design work – tag photos with appropriate keywords

Create “sets” of images for various interior design categories

What not to do on Flickr:

Mix images of professional and personal. Don’t use Flickr like you would your personal Facebook profile

CONCEPT 1: CASE STUDIES

YOUTUBE/VIMEO: How to make yourself stand out

Use your video channel as a space to share your genuine thoughts about interior design, through videos

Create video tours of some of your recent work

What not to do on video:

Don’t be fake. Be yourself and showcase your personality and talents.

SLIDESHARE: Showcase school projects and design portfolios

Use as a source to share your school presentations online

Build SEO for your name and portfolio

Embed the SlideShare presentations into your LinkedIn profile through the app

Create a virtual resume to demonstrate your qualifications

IF YOU HAD 4 DAYS……to create a compelling virtual resume, what would you do? How would you display your portfolio? How would you ensure you weren’t just another paper resume in the 100+ stack of applications? How are you going to utilize your design skills to demonstrate your skills?

PAPER RESUME VS. VIRTUAL RESUME

2 5

© 2011 GMR

If an opportunity came up, are you ready for it?

• Continuously network with other people.

• Keep your resume and photo portfolio updated.

• Let employers find you. Post ongoing content across all your social media channels.

• Companies want social media savvy employees.
