An added value of this PhD Programme is the opportunity to live for four years in Bologna, a city with a rich culture and heritage located in the region of Emilia Romagna, which qualifies among the ten most attractive regions in Europe, based on its economic potential, human resources, cost effectiveness, quality of life, infrastructure and business friendliness (European cities and regions of the future, 2014).
The PhD Programme in Management of the University of Bologna is a 4-year full-time programme offered in English. The PhD Programme aims to train research candidates who aim to become leading scholars in management disciplines at top rated universities.
The PhD Programme offers specializations in two
tracks:
• General Management • Banking and Finance
The PhD Programme offers candidates a broad and
inter-disciplinary education in the fields of business,
management and finance research. It provides them
with strong theoretical foundations in social science
disciplines and a thorough knowledge of research
methods applied to management and financial problems.
The requirements that Doctoral candidates are
expected to meet include: a) to attend core and
elective courses and pass the related exams; b)
to attend Department lunch seminars; c) to develop
a literature review paper by the end of the first year;
and d) to work out a detailed prospectus of their
research thesis (proposal) by the end of the second
year and get it approved. Moreover, it is expected
that Doctoral candidates will present their research
outcomes at research seminars and international
conferences. After the approval of the proposal,
PhD candidates are encouraged to spend a period as
visiting scholars in a foreign university, to be agreed
on with their main thesis advisor and the coordinator.
From the very beginning, each Doctoral candidate will
be assigned an academic mentor (a Faculty member)
whose role is to provide research guidance.
A tutor will also be available to all Doctoral candidates
to provide more general assistance and support on
organizational issues.

attracted students from various countries in the
world. Most of our Doctoral graduates have gained

worldwide (see the box below for a partial list) and have
received best paper awards at several conferences,
