MANUFACTURING ANDMECHANICAL ENGINEERINGTECHNOLOGY - BSManufacturing and mechanical engineering technology (MMET) preparesstudents for dynamic careers in industry. Graduates are versatile andeffective in diverse areas that require understanding of the dependenciesamong material properties, product design, costs, manufacturingsystems, and process technologies. The student views manufacturingfrom an enterprise and system perspective, recognizing the importanceof customer and supplier interactions. To meet these diverse needs,this degree program provides a foundation of mathematics, science, andspecialized technical courses, as well as preparation in oral and writtencommunication. The three main areas of concentration are productdesign, manufacturing systems integration and automation, and qualityassessment. Studies in these areas are supported by a solid foundationin materials and manufacturing processes.

The Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology program isaccredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission ofABET, http://www.abet.org/.

Program MissionThe mission of the Manufacturing and Mechanical EngineeringTechnology program at Texas A&M University is to provide a high-quality, application-oriented education producing professionals who caneffectively contribute to leadership, the advancement of manufacturingand mechanical engineering technology, and improved performanceof industrial endeavors. The educational mission is complementedby applied research and the development of new interdisciplinarytechnology that mutually benefits the university and its industrial,governmental, and academic collaborators. The people in the programare committed to providing service and leadership in the promotion andadvancement of the University and the profession.

Program Educational ObjectivesThe MMET program prepares students who after a few years aftergraduation:

• Demonstrate manufacturing and mechanical technical knowledge,problem solving skills, and implementation skills for careers indesign, installation, operations, technical sales, or service functions inindustry;

• Demonstrate increasing level of leadership and responsibility;• Exhibit both immediate and sustainable productivity in a dynamic

work environment.

Program RequirementsThe freshman year is identical for degrees in aerospace engineering,biomedical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering,computer science, electrical engineering, electronic systemsengineering technology, industrial distribution, industrial engineering,manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology, mechanicalengineering, multidisciplinary engineering technology, nuclearengineering, ocean engineering, and petroleum engineering.The freshman year is slightly different for chemical engineeringin that students take CHEM 101/CHEM 111 or CHEM 107/CHEM 117 and CHEM 102/CHEM 112. Biomedical Engineering also

requires a two semester sequence of chemistry courses consistingof CHEM 101/CHEM 111 or CHEM 107/CHEM 117 and CHEM 102/CHEM 112.  Students pursuing degrees in biological and agricultural engineeringshould refer to the specific curriculum for this major. It is recognized thatmany students will change the sequence and number of courses taken inany semester. Deviations from the prescribed course sequence, however,should be made with care to ensure that prerequisites for all courses aremet.

1 A grade of C or better is required.2 Entering students will be given a math placement exam. Test results

will be used in selecting the appropriate starting course which maybe at a higher or lower level.

3 Of the 18 hours shown as University Core Curriculum electives, 3must be from creative arts (for Industrial Distribution this is 3 hoursfrom language, philosophy and culture, see IDIS curriculum formore information), 3 from social and behavioral sciences, 6 fromAmerican history, and 6 from government/political science. Therequired 6 hours from international and cultural diversity may bemet by courses satisfying the creative arts, social and behavioralsciences (for Industrial Distribution this is language, philosophy andculture), and American history requirements if they are also on theapproved list of international and cultural diversity courses.

4 BMEN and CHEN require 8 hours of freshman chemistry, which maybe satisfied by CHEM 101/CHEM 111 or CHEM 107/CHEM 117 andCHEM 102/CHEM 112; Credit by Examination (CBE) forCHEM 101/CHEM 111 or CHEM 107/CHEM 117 plusCHEM 102/CHEM 112; or 8 hours of CBE for CHEM 101/CHEM 111 orCHEM 107/CHEM 117 and CHEM 102/CHEM 112.
