Principal’s Note
We are excited at the early momentum created by so many great things happening at Marshfield High
School this year. Students, teachers and staff came back energized and focused on having a successful
school year. We are being led by our seniors, the Class of 2015, who have guided us through a couple
assemblies along with showing the way on the field, court, course and other places where Pirates spend
time after class. There have been no shortage of exciting happenings here in the first month.
Last week was a highlight for me with both the induction of our Hall of Fame class of 2014 and the
Grand Opening of Heritage Hall. The inductees to our 2014 Marshfield Hall of Fame are Don Bruce (’48),
Kent Hunt (’48), Chuck Crandall (’54), Mark Henke (’87), Ken Tedder and the (‘95) State Champion Up-
Beats. Although there were many poignant and impactful speeches made, Mark Henke’s was very
memorable for me. He spoke specifically to the process of being a champion and the importance of
those steps that champions take to accomplish their goals. He emphasized that it is not necessarily the
“winning” that is important but the sacrifices and lessons learned along the path that are the ingredi-
ents to successes not just during that season or time but as a lifelong skill. All of the accomplishments
of the inductees were a reminder of why we continue to challenge our students in order to bring out
their best. A special thanks to Greg Mulkey who hosted the evening and Sandy Reiber who did endless
hours behind the scenes to facilitate the Hall of Fame evening.
Prior to the Hall of Fame induction, we proudly opened the doors to our newest addition at Marshfield
High School, Heritage Hall. Heritage Hall, located on the north side of The Pirate Palace, is a room that
acknowledges Pirates of the past who have made contributions in many ways to our community and
around the world. It recognizes past Pirates who are Emmy, Tony and Grammy winners, Olympians, the
first aviator to fly over the poles, leaders who have become mayors throughout Oregon as well as many
Pirates in the state legislature. Mike George and Boyd Bjorkquist hosted the grand opening on Satur-
day, September 27th to a standing room only crowd in the hall. It was attended by a who’s who of Pi-
rate alum’s who came back to admire the museum-like honoring with memorabilia on display compli-
mented by decade placards and flat screen televisions with rolling video of the past. It is quite the site
and we hope you find time to stop in and take in a glimpse into our past. The facility was funded by
donations and in-kind services and is a testament to how much our community and alum’s value Marsh-
field High School. There was an incredible effort made by several people to make Heritage Hall a reality
and if you have an opportunity please thank Mike George, Boyd Bjorkquist, Nancy Tedder, Mary
Paczesniak, Bob Jenkins, Bryan Trendell, Greg Mulkey, Butch Shields, and Sandy Reiber. I’m sure there
are others I forgot and my apologies in advance.
As for the present, our sports teams are off to an incredible start. The boy’s cross country team is
ranked in the top five in the state, led by senior Colby Gillette and junior Sawyer Heckard. The team had
a great season in 2013 with a fourth place finish at the state meet and look to improve upon that this
year. The Boys and Girls Soccer Teams are having success and both are pushing for a possible playoff
spot. Our girl’s volleyball team is ranked in the top three this year and is cruising to an undefeated
league record aiming for the big trophy at state. The football team sits at 3-1 going into Homecoming
Week with its sights set on a playoff run. I’ve watched our dance team practice and perform and they
look on point to have another incredible year, along with our marching band and cheerleading team
that has grown and looked great at the parade. Auditions were completed last week for our opening
fine arts performance and it won’t be long before we have our first concert too! So much happening up
on the hill, hope you can come by and partake in the fun.

Excellence in Education Award Nominees Sought
The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce believes that great
education and a great economy go hand in hand. Thriv-
ing businesses support a healthy education and gradu-
ates who are work or college ready in turn support our
local businesses and community. It is our goal to build
bridges between business and education throughout the
Bay Area. To that end, we are looking for nominations
for three Educator Awards which are handed out annu-
ally:
Innovation in Teaching is for educators that are on the
cutting edge and may form exciting community or busi-
ness partnerships or utilize technology to improve learn-
ing.
Contributor to Education is for educators who contrib-
ute to the learning of students by their tireless efforts,
time and dedication.
Unsung Hero is for educators recognized for their dedi-
cation to making sure students graduate. Regardless of
their titles, they are all heroes to the students they help
reach the goals of diploma or degree.
From these three honorees a Bay Area Educator of the
Year is selected and will be honored at the annual
Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet the last Satur-
day in January. The two runners up will be recognized at
our monthly luncheons following the banquet.
This is a great way to recognize that individual educator
that has made a difference in a student's life. Anyone
can make a nomination and nominations can be made
any time during the year but the deadline for submission
is November 30th. The form is accessible online at
www.oregonsbayarea.org . Contact the Chamber office
at 541-266-0868 for more information.

JOURNALISM
John Hampton has been named a finalist in the national
NSPA Design-of-the-Year contest. This means that his front
page design was selected as one of the top 10 in the nation
for the 2013-14 school year. This is a huge honor for him.
Here is the link to the announcement and where you can see
his competition: http://studentpressblogs.org/nspa/2014-
nspa-design-of-the-year-finalists/ (his page 1 category in-
cludes the first 10 pages you see, with his being the second
one listed). The top five will be announced and recognized
for 1st-5th place (with other five finalists still being recog-
nized as Honorable Mention) at the NSPA/JEA National High
School Journalism convention in November in Washington
DC. Unfortunately we don’t plan on attending the conven-
tion this year for the first time in several years due to cost
(the students are trying to save up their money to attend
next year’s convention in Orlando at Disney World).
This news is especially nice for the staff given that after
three years of being Pacemaker Finalists, and winning the
Pacemaker last year, the staff was not even selected as a
finalist this year. It has been a good lesson for us though.
Judging is very subjective- what appeals to one set of judges
(staff of a professional newspaper) does not necessarily
appeal to another set of judges. I am glad they liked John’s
front page.
John is the second student I have had to receive this honor.
Jake Crump, 2010 graduate and currently the editor at The
Emerald at UO, was named a finalist in this competition and
ultimately won 3rd place in the country.

For years Marshfield faculty and alumni have been discussing the idea of recognizing and honoring the history of
all aspects of Marshfield High School. In 2012 the Heritage Hall committee was formed to do just that. The com-
mittee consisted of Boyd Bjorkquist and Mike George, both 1973 MHS graduates, who serve as the committee chair-
men; Butch Shields, MHS 1965; and Nancy Tedder, long time Coos Bay School District teacher and administrator.
The committee decided that the old wrestling room under the north stands in the main gym was the ideal location
for Heritage Hall. They visited various buildings on the University of Oregon campus (the Jaqua Center, Matthew
Knight Arena, the Casanova Center) for ideas and formulated a long-range plan for the construction of Marshfield's
Heritage room. The committee, along with Joe Slack and HGE Architects, developed a blue print of what the room
would look like and began fundraising in earnest. They, along with several others, including the technology class at
MHS, developed a brochure which explained the project and recognized some of the careers and achievements of
Marshfield alumni, which will be honored in Heritage Hall. Mary Paczesniak, MHS 1968; Bryan Trendell, MHS
1981; Sandy Reiber, MHS 1975; and Greg Mulkey, Marshfield athletic director and long time CoosBay School District
employee joined the committee several months after its inception and added their insight and connections.
Committee members began doing research on the history of Marshfield High School by reading all of the
Mahiscans, dating back to the very first annual, the Kloshewawa in 1915; reading old Ma-Hi Times newspa-
pers; researching in the Coos Historical Museum and interviewing alumni. Construction in the old wrestling room
has been an ongoing process at the same time.
Heritage Hall will be an exciting representation of the students, staff and events of Marshfield High School, with
14 separate 3 feet X 6 feet mural panels depicting significant events in MHS history. Display cabinets will contain
memorabilia of past times in the school's history. Flat screen TV's will display a wide variety of programs. The room
will be available for class reunions and various group meetings.
