1st Period

1. integer

• any of the natural numbers, the negatives of these numbers, or zero

2. rational number

• a number that can be expressed as an integer or the quotient of an integer divided by a nonzero integer

3. scientific notation

• a widely used floating-point system in which numbers are expressed as products consisting of a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by an appropriate power of 10 (as in 1.591 × (10)−20 or 1.591 × 10 − 20)

4. perfect square

• an integer (as 9 or 36) whose square root is an integer

5. irrational number

• a number that can be expressed as an infinite decimal with no set of consecutive digits repeating itself indefinitely and that cannot be expressed as the quotient of two integers

6. real numbers

• a number that has no imaginary part <the set of all real numbers comprises the rationals and the irrationals>

7. Density Property

• the quantity per unit volume, unit area, or unit length: as

• a: the mass of a substance per unit volume

• b: the distribution of a quantity (as mass, electricity, or energy) per unit usually of space (as length, area, or volume)

• c: the average number of individuals or units per space unit <a population density of 500 per square mile> <a housing density of 10 houses per acre>

• having the vertex and one side in common

9. Coefficient

• any of the factors of a product considered in relation to a specific factor; especially: a constant factor of a term as distinguished from a variable

• a number that serves as a measure of some property or characteristic (as of a substance, device, or process) <coefficient of expansion of a metal>

10. Distance Formula

• The distance formula can be obtained by creating a triangle and using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse of the triangle will be the distance between the two points

11. Domain

• The set of all possible input values for a function or relation.

12. Hypotenuse

• The side opposite the right angle in a right triangle.

13. Legs of a right Triangle

• Either of the two sides that form the right angle in a right triangle or one of the two congruent sides in an isosceles triangle.

14. Rational Number

• A number that can be written as a fraction, or as finite or repeating decimals.

• The square root of 2 (1.414 213 6...) is not a rational number.

15. Range

• The difference between the maximum and minimum values in a set of data.

• Another name for gradient

18. Prism

• A polyhedron with two parallel, congruent polygons being its bases and all the other faces being parallelograms.

• The line joining the centers of the bases is called the axis of the prism. When the axis is at right angles to the base, the prism is called a right prism. In this case, the lateral faces are rectangles. Otherwise, it is called an oblique prism.

• A prism is also classified based on the type of its base. It is called a triangular prism when it has triangular bases. Many of the glass prisms used in optical instruments possess this shape. A prism is called a quadrangular prism when it has a quadrilateral base. The cube is a quadrangular prism with square bases and square lateral faces.

19. Scatter plot

• Data that is plotted as points on a graph to show a possible relationship between two sets of data.
