BOOSTER HELP! I would love it if someone can print out the Booster when it’s ready for printing. Take it to Office Depot on East Francisco Blvd (we get a 75% Elk discount), have 75 copies printed. THEN fold and stamp 30 copies to send to our home bound members. And lastly, put the remaining 45 copies in the lobby of the lodge. Not hard, just takes a couple hours. Call if you can take on a super important volunteer job.
Dues for 2019-2020 remain the same as last year - $275 ($250 plus $25 for Grand Lodge and State per capita fees.) As in previous years, we accept cash, checks and credit card payments. You can easily pay on-line ELK1108.ORG/ Membership.

ARCHIVING! - this is an ongoing project that can be done at any time in the office. We need to cull, sort, file past years of financials, meeting minutes, and invoices. It is not urgent, but needs to be done at some point. So why not now! Call if you can help!

Elkdom, Youth & Our Community San Rafael Elks Lodge had the honor of receiving two awards from our community in April. We started off the month being named The Arc Marin’s Founding Community Partner for our support and involvement in Arc Marin’s programs. Arc Marin is an organization for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our Lodge then closed out April by receiving a Proclamation from the City of San Rafael in recognition of Our Lodge honoring America’s Junior Citizens with our Youth Week, among other Youth related observances. Exalted Ruler Eric Holm and San Rafael Lodge’s ARC Intern, Alexander McQuilken

Elkdom & Veteran’s – Memorial Day Memorial Day, which celebrates those who died in the service of our country, is on May 27th. The first reported Memorial Day occurred in 1865 when a group of former slaves who had served in the Union army gathered to bury recently deceased Union soldiers, and put flowers on their graves. Since that time, Memorial Day has been celebrated irregularly as to date, and was finally fixed as the last Monday in May.
Memorial Day today: We request Elks to help out at the Memorial Day ceremony held at the Civic Center on May 27th by escorting veterans to the service which starts at 9:00 at the Marin County Civic Center. Those who want to help should be there by 8:15 to 8:30. As this is my first time as Veterans Chairman for this event, I am still learning what, if anything, else we can or should do. I am hoping Ray and Stewart, as well as veterans, to assist me in learning more.
Best Regards,
Peter Behr Veteran’s Chairman Elkdom & Youth Our San Rafael Elks 2018-19 Americanism Essay winner has gone on to become a CHEA Medalist! We are honored to announce that Delilah Guzman took 3rd place in the CHEA competition with her writing on the Theme: “What makes you proud of America?”
We are very proud of Delilah, who is from Ms. Chris class, Ross Middle School. We look forward to seeing Delilah at the Lodge’s Youth Awards Dinner on May 9th. We hope to see you there, too! May Day & Lei’s at the Lodge
Friday, May 24th 6:30 – 9:00
“Hawaiian-ish” Dinner - Lei Competition
Kitchen Crew led by Joe Tato
Additional Lei workshops in April and May – dates TBD In Hawaii, May 1st, is designated as Lei Day. Originated on May 1st, 1927 by Don Blanding, a reporter for Honolulu Star Bulletin newspaper. He established Lei Day as a day when everyone would wear a lei and give a lei to their friends and loved ones. It is a day to express love, appreciation, and friendship.
Today, May 1st is still celebrated throughout the islands. There is pageantry, hula dancing and music throughout the day, plus a very large lei contest held at the Waikiki Shell with prizes awarded for leis of many categories—the red lei, blue lei, orange lei, purple lei, yellow lei, most Hawaiian, most beautiful, best dry flower lei, etc.
Here in San Rafael, California, a small group of Elk women are initiating a modified May Day celebration and lei contest for members and guests. We are planning to have 3 categories, and have leis displayed in the entry way of the San Rafael Elk mansion on May 24th, 2019 starting from 5 pm-9 pm. *Prizes to be offered after dinner- 8:00 pm.
FOR APPLICATIONS TO ENTER lei contest, email charlotte.kobayashi@gmail.com Call 415.717.5872
Two workshops on lei making will be scheduled for a nominal fee around $20, to cover some material costs and instructor- may vary depending on what materials are used and if you bring your own greenery and flowers. Workshops dates will be one in April, and one in May. Dates to be determined.
Entry forms with criteria for leis to be submitted for entering contest to be provided by last week in April. Cost to enter leis will be $8.00.
Save the date Friday May 24th at San Rafael Elks -6:30-9:00 pm
Dinner to be served at Elks with Joe Tato preparing “Hawaiian-like” food accompanied with Hawaiian music and hula dancing.
For more information email: charlotte.kobayashi@gmail.com Subject: Lei Contest
For dinner reservations, please RSVP at rsvp@elks1108.org by May 14th.
