The United States celebrates Memorial Day annually on the last

Monday of May.

Memorial Day is also casually considered the start of summer.

Memorial Day is also known as Decoration Day. This is a holiday that honors those who have died

during military service for the United States.

Memorial Day is usually celebrated at cemeteries and especially

United States National cemeteries, since most national

cemeteries have military personnel graves and sometimes

spouses.

There are many traditions that Americans honor in

commemoration of Memorial Day. They may fly the American flag, visit memorial cemeteries, place

flags in the graves of fallen soldiers.

Others ways that Americans celebrate Memorial Day are more joyous in national. They may have picnics,

fireworks, concerts, gatherings and parties, and memorials. Many

Americans retreat to vacation spots for the weekend or hold barbeques.

A famous Memorial Day celebration takes place at Gettysburg National

Park every year since 1868, featuring a Memorial Day address.

At the Gettysburg National Park in 1913, both Union and Confederate veterans gathered for the 50 year

anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg to honor the fallen

soldiers.

Now that you have some of the history you will be doing many

different things to better understand Memorial Day.
