• Three layers;1. Dura Mata2. Arachnoid Mata3. Pia Mata
• Meningitis derived from Meninges
Dura Mater
• Latin for ‘Tough Mother’
• Thick and Durable membrane
• Closest to the Skull
• Composed of Dense Connective tissue
• Supports Venous Channels between
the two membranes
Arachnoid Mater
• Middle part of the Meninges
• Web like appearence
• Provides cushioning effect for the CNS
• Thin transparent membrane
• Impermeable to fluids
Pia Mater
• Latin for ‘Soft Mother’
• Adheres to surface of Brain
• Thin membrane and Impermeable to fluids
• Large Blood Supply
Spaces
• Subarachnoid space contains Cerebrospinal fluid and is between arachnoid and the pia mater
• Active in the blood brain barrier
• Through injury dura mater and arachnoid mater
separate and form the subdural space.
