MAP Norway is a platform that links research, education and development to meet the urgent needs of thousands of rural Central American families, promoting the climate-smart territory
approach (CST).
The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) is a regional center dedicated to research and graduate education
in agriculture, and the management, conservation and sustainable use of natural
resources. Its members include Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Venezuela,
the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the State of Acre in Brazil.

“I have felt proud to be in this program since I have really been encouraged through the work…there was a big difference, because a pound of tomatoes cost me 16 córdobas and I was not going to be able to buy them for my children. Then I saw the difference from growing them. I didn’t need to be thinking about how I was going to come up with that money.”

“Before, we thought that to have these things, we would have to have a huge home garden, but we have learned that on these 25 varas, we can grow all these crops. I thank you very much because I can give better food to my children.”

“Before, I bought what other producers discarded from their harvests, but now I have a better product to eat and to sell. I am happy about this change in my home; I am a single mother and one way or another, I must provide food for my children.”
¿What are climate-smart territories?
Climate-smart territories (CST) are envisioned as social and geographic spaces where the actors collaboratively manage ecosystem services to equitably improve the well-being of the population, continuously optimizing land use and climate-change mitigation and adaptation.
Where do we work?
We operate in the central region of Nicaragua and in Trifinio, the cross-border area of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
What are we doing?
How do we do it?
We address five global problems that affect Mesoamerica.
Poverty InequalityFood and nutrition
insecurity
Ecosystem degradation
Vulnerability to climate change
We provide solutions at different scales, giving attention to gender equity.
