SL helps me to project my real self and feelings into SL, and the other way around as well (Beeflin Grut)
SL made it possible for me to test social interactions and things I wouldn’t do in RL. (Fluf Fredriksson)
I found that the soul of me is ok to be, through being me on SL and there fore I am able to touch base with the real me in RL. (Ahsan Nadezda)

I got to know myself better and felt more confident being myself. I made a lot of friends, doing well socially in SL, meant that I could do well socially in RL. (Hokon Cazalet)
I own a club, owning a club helped me to be more confident and to speak up for myself. It learned me to organise better aswell.(Alianne75 Barrymore)
I had a hard life, SL helped me to explore and realise that I am not broken, that things are how they are and can be good. I felt more confortable in SL because I don’t have to see people again when I make big mistakes, or I can mute people when they are really creepy(Casiopa Xue)

Avatar as another person.
Usually through roleplay, I don’t learn anything particularly special it’s just a fantasy, and doesn’t have any real application RL unless you count acting and writing skills as improving.(Silver Greybeard)
I already know how I am RL and express myself here as well in the same manner. Creativety opens in my mind and I learn more about my character and others. (Shannon Iwish)
My experiences in sl don’t have a big influence on my rl, it’s more like my rl affects my sl. I use the knowledge I gained in the army to help my combat strategizing during role playing. (Daria Guisse)
Avatar as another person.
I have become more confident so I guess she has pulled out some of my confidence. (Daria Guisse)
The personal growth I get is from a good friendship. When I portrait a different character I learn more about myself.(Shannon Iwish)
Identity development
Looking glass self, A person defines itself through the social mirror.
(Cooly 1902 & Mead 1934)
Looking glass selfWhat does our social mirror look like.
Real LifeFamilyPeers
Limited spaceSmall variety of cultures
Famely, age doesnt matter Peers, mainly same age
It can be hard to get in touch with people
Networks and groups are less visible wich makes it harder to find and
join them
Second lifeAvatars and their creators
World wideBigger variety of culturesFewer age based networks
Easier to make new friends
Social networks are visible and easier to join or leave
Looking glass self
Specifically SL has made my relationships in RL deeper and more adventurous, loving more people means getting close to and understanding more people, so I can understand more about people in general including those close to me in RL and myself. (Beeflin Grut)
SL helped me to meet many people from all around the world and broaden my personal goals and horizons because of those friendships. (Casiopa Xue)
