Definition of Metamorphic Rocks

• Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks are changed into a new rock because of heat, pressure, or chemical change

Regional Metamorphism

• Occurs over a wide area.

• The heat and pressure are created at convergent boundaries where plates are colliding

• Usually produces foliated rocks

Contact Metamorphism

• A rock’s mineral and texture changes when the rock comes into contact with a magma chamber

• Change caused mainly by heat

• Creates mainly non-foliated rocks
