Metric Measurement Review Guide

The unit of measurement for length is_______.

the Meter

Which type of tools could we use to measure length, width, or height?

Meter stick, metric ruler

The term, mass, can be defined as______.

The amount of matter inside a substance.

The unit of measurement for mass is _______.

the Gram

The tool that we use to determine the mass of various items is_______.

the triple beam balance

The definition for volume is:

the amount of space an object/liquid occupies.

The unit of measurement for liquid volume is______. the Liter

The unit of measurement for the volume of a regular solid is _______.

m3 or cm3

List three ways that we can find the volume of an object: For liquids- pour into graduated cylinder

or beaker For irregular solids- Displacement

method For regular solids- L x W x H

The name of the liquid measurement line that is read for liquid volume is known as the:

meniscus

The scientist who discovered the displacement method of finding the volume of an object is:

Archimedes

Describe the displacement method. What is it? When would we use this method?

The displacement method is used to measure the volume of irregular solids. In order to use this method, you have to start with a set amount of water in a graduated cylinder. Next, you must submerge the object into the water. The water level will increase. Subtract the old water level from the new one to solve for the object’s volume.

The water level in a graduated cylinder was 15.5 ml. A small object was placed into the cylinder raising the water level to 20.0 ml. What is the volume of the small object? Show your work.

20ml-15.5= 4.5 ml The volume of the small object is 4.5 ml.

Additional practice

Name this tool:

Beaker

Test Tubes

Name this tool:

Graduated Cylinder

Name this tool:

Erlenmeyer Flask

The term, density, can be described as_______. how much matter is crammed into

something.

The density of water is_____. 1 g/ml

Two objects that are more dense than water: lead gold

Two objects that are less dense than water: oil cork

Tom wants to determine the density of a marble. Explain how he should solve for this.

First, Tom should use a triple beam balance to mass the marble. Next, he should use the displacement method to find the volume of the marble. Finally, he should use the formula, D=m/v to solve for the density of the marble.

The metric unit of measurement for temperature is_____. Celsius

The freezing point of water in ___________ is _____. Celsius, 0°

The boiling point of water in _____________ is _____. Celsius, 100°

1 m= ____ cm 100

250 ml= _____L .25

A ball of clay was displaced and was found to have a volume of 12 ml. It has a mass of 8 g. Solve for the density of the ball in g/ml.

A cube has a mass of 40 g and a density of 10 g/cm3. Solve for the volume of the cube in cm3.

A lab group submerged an object into 80 ml of water. The water level rose to 85 ml. The group then found the mass of the object was 10g. Find the density of the object in g/ml.
