ABOUT US
The Michigan School of Canine Cosmetology (MSCC) was founded by Dina Perry and has been teaching the art of pet grooming since 1986. As the first grooming school in Michigan, MSCC has been at the forefront of professional grooming education in the state. In 1996, after work-ing as an instructor and the school’s director, Sandy Cook purchased the school and became the owner and CEO.
MEET THE STAFF
Sandy Cook is the owner and CEO of MSCC. She has worked in veterinary hospitals, boarding kennels, grooming salons, and mobile grooming since 1981. Her degree in business and her skilled trade of pet grooming has made its contribution to MSCC throughout the years.
Amber Slater ICMG is the Director/Lead Instructor and has been with the school since 1998. Amber has worked in veterinary hospitals, boarding kennels, grooming salons, and mobile grooming. Amber is an International Professional Certified Master Groomer with the IPG, an Educator with Pet Emergency Education, and is a member of the NDGAA.
Caitlin Flick is an Instructor/Media Specialist and has been with MSCC since 2011. She has
been showing dogs with the AKC since 2002. Caitlin is certified in Salon Details and the Non-
Sporting Group with the IPG as well as Canine and Feline CPR.
Haley Butterwick is an Instructor at MSCC. She has always loved animals and started out by
working at the humane society. After graduating from MSCC in 2013, she stayed on as a
groomer and in 2018 she started instructing full time. She is working toward certification and
grooming competitively.
McKenzy Franklin is an Assistant Instructor and has been involved with animals her whole life.
She has successfully shown horses for many years. She attended MSCC and because of her skill
set and personality, she was asked to stay on after graduation as an assistant instructor.
Kristina Goulet is an Assistant Instructor and has worked with animals for over 20 years. She
has a degree from MSU in Horse Management and worked in animal nutrition for 12 years.
After graduating from MSCC, she worked in a private salon before returning to teach. She is
pet CPR certified and hopes to pursue her goal of becoming a certified groomer.
BASIC GROOMING PROGRAM
Our Basic Grooming Program is a 400 hr. program that prepares students to become pet groomers through
hands-on training while using state of the art equipment, textbooks, class lectures, and multimedia learn-
ing. The goal of the program is to help students be able to successfully graduate from the course and ob-
tain a position in the grooming industry.
Students will learn proper bathing and drying techniques through the application of specialized shampoos
and conditioners based on the animal’s needs and coat variations. Additionally, all pets are dried using
high velocity dryers to ensure proper preparation of the coat and the animal’s safety. Correct brushing and
combing are learned as well as the proper selection and use of tools needed for each coat type and condi-
tion.
In the Basic Grooming Program, students will be taught clipper work ranging from all over trims to the
placement and understanding of AKC breed patterns and profiles. Students will also learn to groom ac-
cording to the customer’s requests, different coat variations, and the needs of the pet. Another facet of
the program is the proper handling and use of scissoring and thinning shears to enhance the finishing of
the grooming process.
An important aspect of learning to groom is understanding animal behavior. Students learn to both recog-
nize and correct different patterns in animal behavior to allow for a safe and happy grooming experience
for both the pet and the groomer.
Students will also have the opportunity to learn cat grooming. This includes the safe and proper handling
of the feline client while bathing, drying, brushing, and clippering the coat. Cat grooming is optional and
not a required part of the hands-on portion of the program.
Class lectures and videos will cover aspects of the grooming procedure from proper breed profiles to sani-
tation in the salon. As part of the program, students will be certified in pet CPR & First Aid through Pet
Emergency Education (P.E.E.). Students will be tested on the AKC’s seven breed groups in addition to a fi-
nal exam. The student’s knowledge will tested with five hands-on grooming demonstrations that include a
bath & brush, curly coat, straight coat, breed profile pattern, and a mixed breed makeover.

PET GROOMING PLUS PROGRAM
Our Pet Grooming Plus Program is a 600 hour professional grooming course that will teach students every-
thing that is covered in the Basic Grooming Program as well as advanced skills such as hand scissoring, hand
stripping/carding, and creative grooming.
Hand Scissoring: The art of hand scissoring is emphasized to enhance the breed profile and sculpt the coat.
Hand scissoring is a skill that will allow you to take your work to the next level.
Hand Stripping and Carding: A technique used for both Terrier and Sporting breeds, hand stripping/carding
is essential for the preservation of correct coat texture, color, and health. Students will learn about the ap-
plication of carding and hand stripping tools to ensure the safety of the dog.
Creative Grooming: Students will learn about coloring/dying, the products available, and how to correctly
and safely apply color to the pet’s coat. A popular trend in the grooming industry, creative grooming offers
clients a truly unique look for their pet.
MSCC strongly believes that being a Professional Pet Groomer also means having ample knowledge of ani-
mal health. While no one can replace a proper veterinarian’s diagnosis, a skilled pet groomer can aid clients
by recognizing issues that need to be addressed. We help prepare students by giving them a wealth of infor-
mation through hands-on teaching and classroom lectures such as: Dental Care, Eye & Ear Care, Pest Con-
trol, Skin & Coat Care, Nutrition for Pets, and Contagious Diseases.
Class lectures and videos will cover aspects of the grooming procedure such as: Breed Profiles, Sanitation in
the Salon, Job Search & Placement, Client-Groomer Relations, Marketing/Advertising, and Grooming Com-
petitions & Certification. As part of the program, students will be certified in pet CPR & First Aid through Pet

Students will be tested on the AKC’s seven breed groups in addition to three tests covering medical termi-
nology and a final exam. The student’s knowledge will be tested with seven hands-on grooming demonstra-

SCHOOL ADMISSION
Admission Requirements: High School diploma or G.E.D.
Admission Procedures: In order to enroll with MSCC, you must call and set up an appointment
to visit the facility. Exceptions will be made for people that have to travel a long distance. After
the visit and interview with the director and the decision has been made, and enrollment con-
tract must be signed and a High School diploma or G.E.D. presented. The school has an open
enrollment policy. Classes start the first and third Monday of the month and are based on avail-
ability. Tuition is due in full ten business days before the start of class. Tuition can be paid by
money order, cashiers check, or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Discover). There is a $75.00
credit card processing fee for tuition payments.
SCHOOL HOURS & HOLIDAYS
Classes are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Students will get one hour for
lunch. The school holidays are as follows: Memorial Day (weekend), Independence Day
(Weekend), Labor Day (weekend), and Thanksgiving Day (weekend). Additionally, the school
will be closed from December 24th through January 1st.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
The school requires prompt attendance by each student. Excessive tardiness or absences may
be penalized. Written Medical Excuse: A written medical excuse will expected on physician/
medical facility letterhead to waive absence. This is required for all medical absences that ex-
ceed one (1) day and is due immediately upon return. Scheduled Personal Days: Scheduled
personal days off will not exceed five (5) days during the period of enrollment. Any scheduled
time that exceeds five (5) days must be approved by the school in writing. Emergency absences
may be made up by attending corresponding sessions with another class on a date designated
by the school authorities. Leave of Absence: If necessary, a leave of absence is possible. A leave
of absence must be applied for in writing and approved by the Director. Special Cases: In case
of prolonged illness or accident, death in the family, or other circumstances that make it im-
practical to complete the program, the school shall make a settlement which is reasonable and
fair to both parties.
STUDENT CONDUCT & DRESS CODE
It is understood that inappropriate conduct may result in probation leading to dismissal. Inap-
propriate conduct includes abusive behavior towards the pets, fellow students, or staff. This in-
cludes physical as well as verbal abuse. Also, a lack of courtesy or professionalism with fellow
students, clients, or staff will be considered unsatisfactory.
Dress is casual. Students must be clean and present a professional appearance at all times. No
open toed shoes will be permitted. For safety reasons, no hoop facial piercings or contact lenses
without safety eyewear are allowed. Smocks will be provided and must be worn by all students.
GRADING & PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports are completed bi-weekly and given to the student for review. The student must
maintain a 2.0 (C) average in both the written and hands-on curriculum to receive a certificate of
completion. The traditional grading system is as follows:
90 - 100 = A (4.0) 80 - 89 = B (3.0) 70 - 79 = C (2.0)
60 - 69 = D (1.0) 0 - 59 = F (0.0)
Failing grades will be reported to the student and a consultation will be required with an instruc-
tor at this time. Failing grades or unsatisfactory progress stated within bi-weekly progress re-
ports for a four week period of time will also bring about a probationary period. Any cheating or
cribbing of test material warrants immediate dismissal. The student has the right to appeal with
the final decision being left up to the school administrator.
PROBATION POLICY & DISMISSAL
It is understood that excessive absences/tardiness, failing grades, and/or inappropriate conduct
will result in probation leading to dismissal. Probation periods are for students prior to dismissal.
These probationary periods are for absences, tardiness, failing grades, or unsatisfactory con-
duct. Probation periods are from 14 to 30 days in which time the student must make appropri-
ate changes or they will be dismissed from the program.
REINSTATEMENT
Students requesting reinstatement to the Michigan School of Canine Cosmetology must obtain
and submit a reinstatement request form to the Director within 30 days from the time of drop,
withdrawal, or dismissal. Students who re-enter the program within 30 days from the date of
withdrawal retain the accumulated hours and grades.
CREDIT FOR PREVIOUS TRAINING
The school administration will evaluate prior training or experience and grant credit appropri-
ately on an individual basis.
EQUIPMENT
Each student must have the necessary equipment in order to enroll in the programs. Students
will receive a complete kit with carrying case from the school upon payment of tuition. If the
student already has some of the required equipment, additional equipment may be purchased
individually to meet the program requirements. The equipment must meet school require-
ments as to type, brand, and condition. Due to increasing costs and availability of tools, the
price may vary. Students are responsible for maintaining their equipment after starting the
program. Periodically, MSCC has a sharpening service onsite to help with equipment mainte-
nance. Equipment maintenance and sharpening costs are the responsibility of the student.
CLASS SIZE & FACILITIES
The average instructor-student ratio will be 12 to 2. The school is complete with a lounge area
including a refrigerator and microwave for those students wishing to bring their lunches. Stu-
dents will work with the most up to date equipment and supplies available to us. This includes
hydraulic tables as well has high velocity dryers. The school is also equipped with three bath tubs
and a drying area along with a reception area, offices, classroom, and the grooming area. At
MSCC, we take pride in having a clean, modern, and well kept establishment.
STUDENT SERVICES
MSCC provides its students with a bi-weekly progress report. This enables students to know the
status of their progress and receive additional help in areas that are deemed necessary. The
school attempts to place each graduate in a position in the pet grooming field through job place-
ment.
In addition to the services listed above, the school makes every effort to work with the students
who have personal problems arise by making schedule changes or a leave of absence available
to them. Our goal is for each student to complete their program successfully and obtain employ-
ment within the pet industry.
ONLINE STUDY GUIDES & TESTING
At MSCC, we strongly believe in the importance of hands-on learning. However, we do offer our
students on online learning source for the AKC breed groups. Our online learning site contains
study guides for each of the seven AKC breed groups as well as pictures for breed identification.
Additionally, our site allows students to take their written tests online. Each student has their
own profile and can take the tests at their convenience. Students will receive one credit hour for
each test they take online. If the student chooses to not take tests online, then tests are taken in
school on a specified day.
FIELD TRIPS & GUEST SPEAKERS
The school hosts guest speakers that cover important topics pertaining to the grooming industry.
We offer a clipper and scissor maintenance workshop for both the Basic Grooming and Pet
Grooming Plus programs. We also host a software and technology speaker for the students en-
rolled in the Pet Grooming Plus Program.
Students enrolled in both programs will also receive the opportunity to become certified in Pet
CPR and First Aid through Pet Emergency Education (P.E.E.) as part of their learning experience.
Additionally, students that are enrolled in the Pet Grooming Plus Program will have the oppor-
tunity to take a half day field trip to a boarding kennel facility. This field trip allows students to
experience another aspect of the grooming and pet industry.
JOB PLACEMENT
For students who complete their program, job placement assistance will be available. We keep a
job placement book and post job openings on our facebook page as well as staying in contact with
veterinarians, kennels, salons, and mobile units throughout the state of Michigan. In addition, we
receive requests from all over the country looking for educated groomers. Although the demand
for qualified groomers is great, MSCC cannot guarantee a position.
SUGGESTION, COMPLAINT & GRIEVANCE POLICY
Suggestions and complaints are encouraged and appreciated by the staff of MSCC. If a student is
uncomfortable making suggestions or complaints verbally, forms are available for this purpose in
the Suggestion & Complaint box located in the classroom. Students who wish to file a complaint
with the State of Michigan may do so by visiting the website: www.michigan.gov/pas
The Michigan School of Canine Cosmetology is licensed and regulated by the State of Michigan and
a member of the International Professional Groomers, Inc.
GROOMING SERVICES
The Michigan School of Canine Cosmetology will be selling services produced by the students to
the public. This service is to be pet grooming for which the school will be compensated. There will
be no compensation to the student for producing this service. Such service is necessary to ensure
that the students are exposed to a variety of pet breeds.
REFUND POLICY
A student may cancel their enrollment at any time by submitting a written resignation. The tuition
and fees paid by the applicant shall be refunded if the applicant is rejected by the school before
enrollment. An application fee of not more than $25.00 may be retained by the school if the appli-
cant is rejected by the school before enrollment. All tuition and fees paid by the applicant shall be
refunded if requested within 3 business days after signing a contract with the school. All refunds
shall be returned within 30 days. Once the 3 business days have elapsed, the following policies will
apply:
Non-Refundable: The registration fee, equipment, textbooks, and carrying case are NOT refunda-
ble after 3 business days of signing the enrollment contract.
Other Cancellations: Students who have not visited the school facility prior to enrollment will
have the opportunity to withdraw without penalty within 3 days following a tour of the school
facilities. The percentage of program completion is calculated by dividing the number of clock
hours scheduled for and available to the student by the number of clock hours required to com-
plete the program. Any monies due to the student shall be refunded within 30 DAYS from the last
date of student attendance. This will include up to 3 days of scheduled hours after the student
gives written resignation from the program.
MSCC ONSITE HOUSING
MSCC has onsite dorm housing available for our female students. Often, having a roommate
makes the stay away from home easier and fun. A study partner, and possibly a new friend, is an-
other plus. There are also many apartments near the school for those students wanting a more
private setting.
The dorm is 1,200 square feet. It includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a large community liv-
ing/kitchen area. Furnishings that are provided include dishes, silverware, pans, bedding, and
towels. The student only needs to bring clothes, food, and their favorite pillow!
Lansing has many attractions to offer including sporting events, shopping, museums, and a river
walk for biking and running. The school is within walking distance to grocery stores and other
shopping. The bus stop is only a few yards away so a car is not necessary.
Monthly rent for the dorm is $500.00 per person. This includes all utilities, satellite TV, washer/
dryer, and wireless internet. If rent is paid by credit card, there is a $15.00 credit card processing
fee.
