EsophagusMimi Hagearty and Taysha Lujan

Objectives

● Record notes● Identify different parts and function of the

organ● Apply function● Construct model

Function of the esophagus

● The esophagus seems to have only one important function in the body- to carry food, liquids, and saliva from the mouth to the stomach.

Esophagus in the Digestive System

Two Functions Body System provided

● Turn the food you eat into something useful for the body.

● When you eat, your body uses this system to digest food, so your cells can use it to make energy.

Organ location in the Human Body

● The esophagus is located in the digestive system.

“Gross Anatomy”

● Study of the structures of the body using the human eye- free dictionary

“Microscopic Anatomy”

● Study of microscopic structures of tissues and organs -free dictionary

Major Disease of Esophagus● Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). ● The muscle at the end

of your esophagus that does not close properly.

● Allows the stomach to leak back, or decrease, into the esophagus and irritate it.

What’s it like to have this disease? Symptoms?

● If left untreated then it leads to a precursor cancer.

● Symptoms like Esophageal Adenocarcinoma (fatal cancer), heartburn, laryngitis, and nausea.

How does the esophagus function to maintain

homeostasis?

● It maintains homeostasis by the absorption of substances that occurs through the lymphatic system. The toxins absorbed by the lymphatic system are from the digestive system.

Description; Organ structure function

● In gross anatomy the esophagus extends from the lower body of the cricoid cartilage (at the level of the 6th cervical vertebra), to the cardiac office of the stomach at the side of the body of the 11th thoracic vertebra.

How can a person care for the esophagus?

● It depends on how bad the esophagus is. But there are some ways to help like anti-reflux medicines, surgery, ablation(procedure to kill cells with heat or freezing them), etc.

What will it look like in a fetal pig dissection?

Lab Activity

● “Does your food fall down your stomach upside down?”

● Marbles, dish soap, balloons

We will try two different experiments that the students will conduct in groups.

Objective on lab activity● The objective of this lab activity is to

understand that whether you are sideways, upside down, up straight, the food will end up going through your esophagus down to your digestive system.

● See if the marble goes down the balloon without anything and then try it with the dish soap the second time.

Thanks for all you attention! Any Questions?
