Miss Chapman, Mrs Lambert and all of the staff in the
Foundation Stage offer a very warm welcome to our new
children starting this term and of course, a warm welcome
back to our existing children . As a school, we continue with
our year’s overarching theme of I WILL...
The Foundation Stage topic for this term is
FROM RAGS TO RICHES
The two central
stories to be used
for this topic are
Cinderella and Jack
and the Beanstalk.
The children will be
learning to retell them within the Talk for Writing approach.
Anyone who saw the FS1 Nativity will appreciate how, even very young children, can
learn new vocabulary and whole stories using this approach. The children will be building
on this technique to imitate these new stories, innovate (change them) and, eventually,
become independent story writers.
Using this topic as a stimulus to cover other areas of the curriculum, the children will also
be using our new remote control cars (brought to us by Santa Claus!) to explore different
story settings; create pictures (painting and collage) in response to their favourite
traditional stories; use puppets to retell stories and create their own role-play areas (for
example castles, beanstalks or forests). We ask for your support in this topic by asking
you to share your own favourite traditional story with your child.
As always, our Come and See topics will be woven
tightly into every area of learning as children learn to
recognise the stories of Mary and Joseph taking
Jesus to the temple, Jesus with the children and, of
course, Good Friday and Easter Sunday as religious
stories they know and love. They will also find out
more about how the Parish gathers in the church to
celebrate together.
Maths learning will also link to the topics
wherever possible—learning about
measuring and money in a shoe shop
(think Cinderella!); patterns within stories
and 3D shapes to build castles. As always,
children will be counting, comparing
numbers, noticing how they are made up
and how they change.
Later this term, we will be continuing our Rags to Riches topic during our visit to:
SUNDOWN ADVENTRUE LAND—STORYBOOK VILLAGE
Date to be confirmed
Forest School sessions at Glapton Wood, led by both Miss Chapman and Mrs Lambert will
continue to run in the second half of this term for all FS2 children and for the older children in
FS1. The newest children in FS1 will join in later during the year once they are settled within
the Unit.
Forest School is a unique and powerful opportunity for children to develop their relationships,
resourcefulness, resilience and their ability to reflect whilst taking part in open-ended activities
in an outdoor environment.
Please come and talk to us about any questions you may
have. We look forward to this busy and exciting term!
Personal, Social, Emotional Development

Talk about their surroundings; particularly in the outdoor area, what they see, hear, feel and smell.
Allow your child to observe animals and describe them.
Allow them to use simple tools; such as a small hand trowel or vegetable peeler.
Encourage them to feel different textured objects and describe; rough, smooth, soft etc.
