Dear Fellow Chamber Members,
As we get started in 2013, the North Branch Area Chamber of Commerce is renewing its efforts to spread the word of “Buy Local”. The term “buy local” seems like a simple message to get across to the community. It makes sense when you tell someone that when money is spent in the community, it benefits all of us who live and work here. It pays the salaries of those who work in the community. It supports our local government and schools. Seems like a no brainer, right? It is a win-win for everyone.
The problem with getting the ball rolling is that businesses and the community need to commit to buying local. For example, as a business, if you are doing improvements you would need to use a local contrac-tor and require the contractor to use a local supplier for materials. If you are shopping for a gift, buy it locally. If you buy an I-Pad in Minneapolis, you will pay the same price as one bought at Radio Shack in the North Branch Outlet Mall. Plus, if you buy it at Radio Shack in town, they will show a genuine interest in making sure that you are comfortable with your purchase. Heck, if you have a lot of questions like me, they may even remember you by name when they take the time to help you out.
As businesses, we need to earn and work to retain our local customers. We need to offer members of our community a good value and great service. We should not expect that because we are their neighbors they should do business with us.
In my view, there are two sides to “Buy Local”. It is great when a person or business in the community gives me the opportunity to do business with them. As an area business, it is then my responsibility to earn the business of that customer and to create a mutually beneficial business relationship. Getting this message out to the community is my goal as the President of the North Branch Area Chamber of Com-merce for 2013.
Sincerely, Bill Young, Anderson & Koch Ford2013 North Branch Area Chamber President

Chisago SWCD Receives State Award
During the 2012 Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) Annual Convention, the Chisago Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was awarded the 2012 SWCD of the Year. Each year the MASWCD honors a Conservation District for standing out as a leader among the state’s 90 soil and water conservation districts. The award is based on a number of factors including conservation program delivery, training for staff and supervisors, communication with the public, media and other part-ners, and involvement in MASWCD. “We’re honored to be recognized for this award,” said Roland Cleveland, Vice-Chair of the Chisago SWCD. Cleveland credited the success of their district to their tremendously talented group of employees and a devoted board of supervisors and noted that one of the SWCD’s strongest assets is our ability to partner with other local, area, state, and federal agencies to accomplish our mission: “Bringing Conservation to Chisago County”. One of the SWCD’s closest partners is the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), which is co-located with the SWCD in North Branch.During the MASWCD State Convention, Cleveland also received the Outstanding SWCD Supervisor Award for 2012. This award honors a SWCD Supervi-sor who has demonstrated leadership and achieved significant results in the conservation of Minnesota’s soil and water resources. For more information about the Chisago SWCD log on to their website at www.chisagoswcd.org.
