TRANSCRIPT

Monday 9/27/2010Do Now

1) Staple the Scientific Instruments Worksheet that Ms. Chan just returned into your

notebook.

2) What is the objective of today’s class?

3) The TV weather forecaster says that it will be between 40 and 50 degrees today. The actual reading turns out to be 43. Was the forecaster

accurate or precise? Explain.

Class Checklist No students were talking during the review of the Do Now, during teaching time (note-taking)

and during closing.

Every student was on time

Ms. Chan did not ask any student to put away their electronics (cellphones/IPODS)

No curse words were used inside this room.

Every student remained in his/her seat until independent practice.

By the time Ms. Chan goes over this list, every table has 2 chairs behind it.

All students followed the class rules. (Students did not argue with Ms. Chan)

Every student brought THEIR OWN pencil and paper to class.

Every student completed ALL of the class work for the day.

No student had his/her head down during class.

EVERY student turned in the homework ON-TIME.

It took Ms. Chan no more than 10 seconds to get the entire class’s full attention (eyes forward, mouths shut).

Review Do Now1) Staple the Scientific Instruments Worksheet that

Ms. Chan just returned into your notebook.Weren’t here? Either: See me after school or visit www.sayremschan.wikispaces.com

2) What is the objective of today’s class?3) For tomorrow, the forecast is 52.47 degrees at 4

PM. It turns out to be 39.14 degrees. Was the forecaster accurate or precise? Explain.

A: Precise, but not very accurate. - 39.14F is not close to the true value. - The predicted temp had 2 values after

the decimal. So did the real temp.

Announcements

• Your first quiz will be this Friday. It will be open notes.

• Remember that when we take notes, you are only writing down what is BOLDED and UNDERLINED.

Absences• You have a “MISSING” in my grade book when

you aren’t in class.

• Show me a note for why you were absent and I will either:– Change the MISSING to EXCUSED if it’s a Do Now

or Exit Slip.– Allow you to make up the assignment for full

credit.

Thursday’s Exit Slip (6 pts)

(3) A jar contains $15. Four groups, each containing 3 students try to guess the amount of money in the jar.

Group 1: $2.00 $2.01 $1.99Group 2: $1 $100 $ 1,000Group 3: $14 $16 $17Group 4: $15 $15.01 $14.99

9/27 Notes: Scientific Notation

• A way of writing large or small #’s w/o writing all the zero’s.

• General format:a x 10b

“Coefficient”“Exponent”

Review powers of 10:

• 103 = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000• 102 = ?• 10 1 = ?

• 10-1 = 1/10 = 0.1• 10-2 = ?• 10-3 = ?

Example: Write the Distance From the Sun to the Earth in scientific notation.

93,000,000 miles

Step 1

• Move decimal left• Leave only one number in front of decimal

Step 2

• Write number without zeros

Step 3

• Count how many places you moved decimal• Make that your power of ten

The power often is 7 becausethe decimalmoved 7 places.

The exponent is positive because 93,000,000 is greater than 1.

• 93,000,000 --- Standard Form

• 9.3 x 107 --- Scientific Notation

Example Problems

1) 98,500,000 = 9.85 x 10?

2) 64,100,000,000 = 6.41 x 10?

3) 279,000,000 = 2.79 x 10?

Write the following in scientific notation in your science notebook. You have 5 minutes.

9.85 x 107

6.41 x 1010

2.79 x 108

Going from Scientific Notation to Standard Form

For a positive exponent: Move the decimal to the right

3.4 x 105 in scientific notation

340,000 in standard form

3.40000 --- move the decimal

Example Problems:Write the following in Standard Form. You have 5 minutes.

• 6.27 x 106

• 9.01 x 104

• 4.05 x 10-2

• 6,270,000• 90,100• .0405

Independent Practice

• Work on the handout from “Worksheetworks.com” titled: Scientific Notation.

• Worth 10 points

• If you finish early, turn the paper over and begin the homework assignment.

WorksheetWorks.comScientific Notation EXAMPLES:

(1)6.94 x 10-4

(2)4.41 x 104

.000694

44100

Homework (15 points)1. The backside of the handout.2. Begin reviewing notes.

• New procedure for turning in HW:– Take out your HW with your notebook.– We will review the HW as needed after reviewing the

Do Now.– You place the HW into the Assignment Box.

– It needs to be in there by the end of IP, or it will be late.

Tomorrow …

• You will turn in this entire handout.

• I will then grade the class work AND homework together.
