• Reflection: According to the Princeton Dictionary,

the definition of the word destiny is- an event or course of events that will inevitably happen in the future.

Q: Do you believe in destiny? What do you think yours is?

Our Next Unit….Growth and Expansion: “Manifest

Destiny” Some believed that it was the United

States’ destiny to expand across the North American Continent…. No Matter What!

Conflict with… environment, Native Americans, Slavery, and War!

Moving West….• The first census- official count of population- revealed

a population of 4 million with most living east of the Appalachian mountains.

• Within 30 years, population had grown to nearly 10 million with 2 million living west of the Appalachian’s!

1790: 1820:

Westward Expansion!

•By Land…– The nation needed good roads for travel and for

the shipment of goods. • Turnpikes- toll roads• “Corduroy Roads”• National Road built in 1806 • Wilderness Road (p. 316)

– *Helped develop TN!

By Water…

• River travel was far more comfortable• But, Problems:

– Hard to go against the current (most rivers ran N to S, not E to W)

– Barges were SLOW!

• So, Robert Fulton develops a Steamboat- Clermont– NYC to Albany; 150 miles in 32 hours… used to

take 4 days!

WESTWARD EXPANSIONHow could you travel easier if there was no water-

way? MAKE ONE!*Canals- an artificial, man-made

waterway*

WESTWARD EXPANSIONASSIGNMENT 3 (Map on p. 318)1. What 2 bodies of water did the Erie

Canal connect?2. What city was located on the western

edge of the Erie Canal?3. What city grew along the Southern tip of

Lake Michigan?

By 1850, the U.S. had more than 3,600 miles of canals

connecting the East Coast with the Great Lakes area.

WESTWARD EXPANSION

James Monroe1817-1825

Monroe Doctrine Era of Good Feelings Rise of sectionalism

WESTWARD EXPANSIONFollowing the U.S. victory in the War of 1812, we

entered a time of political peace that was also a time of national pride and unity. This time period became known as the “Era of Good Feelings” during James Monroe’s Presidency (#5).

This did not last though…

WESTWARD EXPANSION*Sectionalism- loyalty to your region of the

country* (westerners, southerners, northerners)

Issues…- States’ rights- Slavery- Nullification- Tariffs- National Bank- Internal Improvements

WESTWARD EXPANSIONNEW QUESTIONS…

When new states were added in the newly acquired LA Territory, should slavery be allowed or prohibited?

Should the people of a state be allowed to decide for themselves?

In 1820, Missouri applied to become a new

state…slavery or free? What about the rest of

Louisiana?

*Insert chart to compare transportation….

• Can describe improvements in transportation in 1800’s vs. today…

• Take a look at sectionalism…
