STAFF NEWS…..
We would like to say
congratulations to Mr S Crisp
who has been appointed Data
Manager and to Mrs J Clarke
who has been appointed
Examinations Officer.
Both Mr Crisp and Mrs Clarke
will start their new positions
from January 2018.
Piano Masterclass
On Wednesday 29th November 2017, Monk’s Walks music
students were treated to an afternoon piano masterclass.
The session was delivered by world-class concert pianist Richard
Meyrick. “A dynamically powerful pianist, Richard Meyrick’s
charismatic performances at major concert halls and more intimate
venues frequently bring audiences to their feet in rapturous
acclaim for his “thrilling technical wizardry ... superb rich sonorities
and genuine sensitivity” (Daily Telegraph).
Richard is a consummate professional as both performer and
teacher, effortlessly mixing scholarship, hard work and fun in all of
his projects. Awarded a foundation scholarship to the Royal
College of Music at sixteen, Richard made his concert début at the
Wigmore Hall, while still a student. This was followed by a live
televised performance of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No 2 conducted
by Sir Adrian Boult.”
Richard had the audience enthralled by his musical talent and was
able to provide some invaluable advice for our budding musicians.

HEADTEACHER
COMMENDATIONS
Lucy Sugg (KK) was awarded a
Headteacher’s commendation following
her gymnastic successes with her club at a
recent County Championship competition.
Well done on winning the medals and
trophy Lucy and keep up the hard work
with your training.
Miss Godfrey-Evans recommended Bill
Alford for a Headteacher’s commendation.
She said “Bill produced a fantastic piece of
prep. He was asked to research the angle
properties of four particular shapes and
form a poster. Bill must have taken a large
amount of time and effort as he featured
extra shapes and the presentation was
excellent.”

Year 8 Visit to the Globe
On Wednesday 29th November our Year 8 students travelled into
London to visit William Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. The trip was
organised by the school’s English department to support the students
current subject ’Romeo and Juliet’.
During the trip students enjoyed a tour of the Theatre, they ventured
behind the scenes where they took part in some Shakespeare acting,
they visited the theatre’s museum where they learnt lots of
fascinating facts about how life was like in England back in
Shakespeare’s days and they went up onto the stage and sat in the
stalls.
“The stage experience was lovely because we saw how small the
theatre actually was and found it fascinating that the theatre had no
roof or heating. The museum was very interesting, we read many
facts which made us think about how different our lives are now
compared to what they would have been many years ago”.

YEAR 9 SKIING LESSONS
From the slopes… “Over the last two weeks, I have really enjoyed the skiing lessons. The
instructors were really helpful, telling you what was good, what you
need to improve on and showing you exactly how to do it. I was quite
a slow learner, so I would have preferred more than two lessons to
help me along more and get me to a good level of experience but
overall I really enjoyed the experience and cannot wait to go skiing in
Austria”. Sarah Ramsdale (HS)
“The Skiing lessons built my confidence on the snow. The instructors
were helpful and helped me overcome my nerves. By the end of the
lessons I was able to ski down the slop confidently. I am looking
forward to the trip as now I will be able to participate in all of the
activities”. Lottie Nikiel (HS)
“I had a great time at the skiing lessons. All the instructors were really
nice and I felt comfortable there. I have learnt very quickly how to ski
and that is because they were willing to help when you needed it.
However the one issue I felt was that we couldn't cover everything in
the two lessons that we had. Overall it has been a great experience
and I look forward to the trip”. Emma Wheeler (HS)

County Table Tennis Finals
Monk’s Walk School did incredibly well in the County Tennis finals
held on Monday 4th December. Our U13 boys finished last in a
group of six. U13 girls came 4th overall in the entire county. The
U16 boys who were undefeated in group stage (including two 4-4
draws against Watford Grammar School for Boys and Hitchin Boy’s
School) made it to the semi finals where they lost to Bishop
Stortford High School 8-0. They then lost the 3/4th place playoff to
Hitchin Boy’s 8-0. Finally the U16 girls (Rose Jarrard, Sophia
Underwood, Sophia Sutcliffe, Paige Petro) impressively finished
2nd in the county overall. Well done to you all.
County Badminton Finals
Well done to both Monk's Walks badminton teams who took part in the county badminton final. Our U14 boys team
(Finley Goode, Ben Crooks, Morgan Hume, Owain Kimber and Joel Weaver) overall finished 4th in the county.
They finished second in their group to qualify for semi finals where they lost to the eventual champions and then
narrowly lost 3-2 in the 3rd/4th place playoff to Roundwood School. Our U16 boys (Ollie Green, Ollie Youell, Ed
Sanders and Aidan Lovett) finished 4th in a very tough group behind the eventual finalists Parmiter’s School and
Richard Hale School.
Alfie’s Shooting Success
