Put people’s actual words on the page. Use words in quotation marks to show your readers the way a person really talks. Word choice, grammar, and style can tell the reader a lot about someone’s attitude, where they are from, how they grew up, etc..
Put your reader in a person’s mind and let us hear their hopes, fears, worries, concerns, etc. about what’s happening. Everyone wants to read minds!
When something is important, describe how it looks or feels, tastes or smells. Zoom in like an expensive camera and give the reader original details to make the story come to life.
Bring a moment of action to life by describing it step-by-step. Break it down. If the action is quick and violent, try short sentences.
