Letter from the President Helloeveryone,

WelcomenewandreturningmemberstoNashvilleAcademyofNutritionandDietetics!MynameisEmilyHoganandIamthecurrentPresidentofNANDforthe2017-2018membershipyear.Thisismy6thyearontheboardandsofartheyearisstartingoffgreat!WehavesomefuneventsplannedfortheyearincludingopportunitiesforCEU’sandnetworking.

NANDhashadseveralreallygreatyearswithevents,membershipandadvocacy.Wehavemadeastrongefforttohavemoreofapresenceoutinthecommunity,showingwearethenutritionexperts.Moreandmoreorganizationsareaskingforourparticipationwhichdemonstratesthatournameisgettingoutthere.Ibelievewearekeepingthatenergyandprogressgoingforwardthisyear.Ihopeyouwilljoinusfortheseevents!

MayorMeganBarryhasataskforcetoaddressfoodaccessintheNashvillearea.ASeniorAdvisorforMayorBarryreachedouttoNANDtoaskforourparticipationwiththistaskforce!IcertainlyappreciatethattheyknewwheretogotofindalocalRegisteredDietitian/NutritionistinNashvilletoparticipate.HeatherBumbalough,PublicRelationsboardmemberforNANDattendedameetingAugust17thandwillcontinuetobeactivewiththistaskforce.

Pleaseconsideroneofourvolunteeropportunitiestospreadalittlenutritionlovethroughoutthecommunity.Wewouldalsolovetohaveyouconsiderbeingpartofourboard.Wewillstartaskingfornominationsfornextyear’sboardsoon.Therearearangeofpositionsandforyourtime,yourmembershiptoNANDwillbefree!Feelfreetoreachouttomeifyouwanttolookthroughanyjobdescriptions.

TakingeverythingonedayatatimehasquicklybecomemymottoduringmysenioryearatMTSU.Therearesomanyassignments,tests,fieldtrips,andmorethatdieteticstudentshavetodoinordertoprepareforwhatistocomewithadieteticinternship!Itissoeasytogetcaughtupinallthatneedstobedoneanditcancauseyoutostress.Herearesomethingsthatwillbebeneficialtoyouasyoucompleteyourundergradindieteticsandprepareforyourinternships.

Yourprofessorsareyourmainresourcewhenitcomestogettinganinternship.Theyknowyourworkethicinacademicsmorethananyoneelse.Theycanserveasagreatreferenceforyouonyourresume.Takeadvantageoftheirresourceswhenitcomestofindingajobrelatedtodietetics.Yourprofessorswanttoseeyousucceedandtheywilldoanythingtheycantohelpyoureachyourfullpotential.

Takeadvantageofanyopportunitiesthatmaypresentthemselvestoyou.IwasgiventheopportunitytoworkatWilliamsonMedicalCenterasadishwasher.NowIknowwhatyouarethinking,“Iwouldnotgetcaughtdeaddoingdishesatahospital!”Itisimportantthatyoulearnalloftheareasinthekitchenifyouwanttoworkasaclinicaldietitiansomeday.Clinicaldietitianshavetoknowtheinsandoutsofakitchenandwhatbetterwaytolearnthanstartingatthebasiclevelofanykitchen.IdidnotrealizeitwhenItookthejobasadishwasher,butmytimeinthatpositionwasavaluablelearningexperience.

Itisimportanttosurroundyourselfwithpositiveandencouragingpeople.Thisisthetimeinyourlifewherethingsarestartingtogetrealforyou.Tryingtojugglework,school,volunteerwork,andasociallifecanbeprettydaunting,butifyouhavepeopletheretoconstantlyencourageyouthenitwillmakeyourlifethatmucheasier.

Procrastinationisyourworstenemy!Itisagoodideatogetacalendarandwritedownallduedates.Thenfromthereyoucansetasideaspecifictimeeachdaytoworkonassignmentsandmaybeevenworkahead.Therehavebeenacoupletimeswherelifecaughtmebysurprise,andIdidnotstudyasmuchasIwouldhavelikedtofortests.Intheendscramblingtogetassignmentsdoneonlyhurtsyou.Itisnotyourfinestwork,anditalsoaddsunnecessarystresstoyourlifethatyoucancontrol.

Stressmanagementisamajorkeytosuccessyoursenioryear.IstillstrugglewithstressandgetboggeddownsometimesbutIhavefriendsandfamilytohelpencouragemealongtheway.Ialsotrytohavefuneverynowandthentogetmymindoffofwhatiscausingmetostress.Someothersimplestressmanagementtoolsinclude:seekinghelp,relaxing,managingtime,andrecreation.Justrememberthatyouarenotthefirstonetogothroughthislearningprocessandyoucertainlywillnotbethelast.Justknowtherearebiggerandbetterthingswaitingforyou,sodonotgiveup!
