Nature Of Society

‘Sense and Sensibility’• ‘Sense and Sensibility’ novel is written by Jane

Austen.• Publishes in 1811.• It represents the features of the time in which

it is written.• It was a…..- time of Romantic Literature.- time of Industrial Revolution.- time of Classicism.- time of Democracy and personal freedom.

Society of Romantic time• It was a time when everyone of the society fits into stratified, hierarchical

class system. • Once if one fits into one class, its too difficult to move across their class.• Poor were suffering a lot. • Rich were increasing their wealth.• Society was ruled by elite. • Situation changed in 1832.

Society described in the novel• Austen’s novel is a portrait of English society.• But it represents only privileged, wealthy

upper class. • All characters in the novel are very well-off

yet they were worried about the finance.• They were generally very concerned with

money, to the point of greed.• Novel opens with the issue of inheritance. • After the death of Mr Dashwood, John

Dashwood’s(Son of Mr Dashwood) wife Fanny persuades her husband not to give any money to his sisters.

Society of Greed• Most of the characters of the novel concern money, wealth and social-

economic class rather than love. • Mrs Ferrars doesn’t care whether Edward loves Lucy or not, she cares only

about that her son is entering into marriage which will give their family advance position in society.

• Mr Willoughby, despite his affection for Marianne, marries Miss Grey because she belongs to a wealthy family.

• Marianne and Elinor resist this greed and materialism for some extent, but not entirely.

• The only one character who steps out of the novel’s society of greed is Colonel Brandon.

Society of Modern time• In modern world also we can see three type of class in our society: Upper,

middle and lower class.• This division is made by economical status of every person. • In modern time upper class is increasing their condition and lower class

becoming more and more poor. • But there is no limit for any person.• By one’s own ability and hard work one can improve their condition. • There is large scope of employments in modern time.

Rights and Rules• In present time boy and girl both are

getting same rights in inheritance. • If a girl feels injustice with her, she

can do a case and can get justice.• People are awaken for their rights.• Democracy Is one of the most

powerful weapon of modern people. • Law supports equality.

Society of Individual• In modern time money and wealth is equally important as before. • Marriage is not too much money concern because love marriages are

increasing in number.• In this time casteism/ classcism is something that even today tied people to

go beyond their caste/ class. • But who is aware is going out of the caste and doing as per their own likings.• Moral standards are same. Elders are given respect. • Marriage system is also same at some extent.• Yet technology and mass media are playing great role in changing the world.
