Our Challenge

THE FIRST YEARS OF TEACHING ARE THE HARDEST

• Teacher education programs do not prepare new

teachers for the rigors of the classroom

• New teachers often lack strong in-school support–

they are left to “sink or swim”

• New teachers become discouraged and often leave

the profession within 5 years

Our Challenge

MEANWHILE…

• We know that teachers have more impact on

student success than any other school-based factor

• The students who are in greatest need of excellent

teachers are the ones who are disproportionately

taught by inexperienced teachers

• The achievement gap widens.

• What this will mean: NTC becomes part of a

larger dialogue on teacher effectiveness and

continues to demonstrate progress in improving

teacher effectiveness through comprehensive
