We also offer a great junior membership for anyone under the age of 40 and now a single membership for anyone unmarried looking to
join the club. Since we are not allowed to advertise, members are our best way to get the word out.

LES’ WE FORGET, BILL STREET! ! The year was 1992, and George Scott, Jr. was again our Club President. It is well worth repeating that his father, George, Sr., owner of Scott Gas Company, was the mayor of Trent Woods for several years. His brother, Bryan, served on the the NBGCC Board of Directors.! Phoebe Briley was our Ladies Champion. I regret there was no background information available on Phoebe, however she will be reappearing as champion again.! Hank Little captured the Men’s Championship again that year and, as mentioned, this is the start of a long run of titles for him. Hank is the oldest son of Dr. Suzanne & Dr. Reese Little.
! Leroy Price continues his dominance of the Seniors Championship in 1992. Worth repeating is the fact that he and his wife, Mavis, are the Club’s only husband and wife team to claim regular Men’s & Women’s Championships. ! Two fine golf tournaments were held at the Club recently. The Kenny Morris Tournament to benefit the Hospice House was attended by nearly 200 golfers and the Men’s Member-Guest with over 100 golfers. Combined with the nice spring weather and opening of the pool, our Club has been a place of enjoyment for many. Get out and take it in!!

! Happy summer everyone! The heat is on and so are the summer camps. We are in the middle of both the tennis and the combo (golf, tennis & swim) camps. Participation has been outstanding and we are so grateful to see all the campers out having a great time. ! Space is still available for both camps in July & August. If you think your child would like to participate, please contact us by email or on the Club’s website. You may also call or stop by, we would love to see you.! Thank you to all the kids who have already taken a camp with us. We love to see the kids during the summer. Some we have not seen since last summer. It always makes us feel young at heart to teach the kids some new tricks.

Just a reminder that on the first Thursday of every month, we hold a mixed doubles social, weather permitting. The mixed doubles is for all tennis players with different skill levels. It is mainly for couples to come out, have some fun and get away from it all for a few hours. Of course, there are a few libations and you are welcome to order some light snacks from the Club. Your tennis staff will be more than happy to pick them up for you. The festivities start at 6:30 pm and we go until everyone wants to stop. It is a lot of fun and we usually have a few wrinkles in there, just for the fun of it.M

Tennis News
I just got back from coaching at a USTA Closed Southern State Tournament encompassing Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. First, I would like to say we are so lucky to be represented by such outstanding tennis talent here in this great state. Second, which I feel is just as important, is these children play the game with dignity, grace and respect. Our very own Thomas Peacock ended the weekend winning 5 out of 6 singles matches, finishing in 9th place in the 10 and under boys division. His only loss came against the number 3 seed in the tournament. Thomas has been training very hard and has come a long way to reach this level. He had to play through pain the last two days of the tournament, as he strained his rotator cuff. He truly does show the grit and determination it takes to play at a high level. We are so proud of his accomplishments here at NBGCC. NBGCC has many other students who are participating in local USTA tournaments in NC: Mary Holland Hoveland, Dawson Frogley and Caroline Murphy.
! As I was coaching over the weekend in Columbia, SC it was clearly evident that there are many ways to coach tennis. What I have found over the years, is the tried and true coaching principles will always apply no matter how the game of tennis changes. Fads come and go, new technology helps to grow interest in the game, and strategy can vary wildly, depending on the coach. The principles I was taught at a very early age were: There is no substitute for good footwork (and that takes time to perfect), focus on the fundamentals of the game with a concentration on technique and always leave all that you have on the court. Mental toughness and a willingness to never give up or give in to the pressure of the moment will allow you to be successful in tennis and in life. ! Building a solid player is not just physical, it is also mental. Just as in life, you need both elements to be confident, no matter what the score or circumstance. We here at NBGCC teach life lessons and are lucky enough to do that through tennis. It maybe an “old school” coaching theory, but I have seen how well it works first hand. I hope through coaching, we teach our students to become better people as they grow in life and tennis.
Men’s Tennis Member-Guest
! On May 31st we held the Men’s Member-Guest Tournament at NBGCC for the first time in years. It was a round robin format, having all 5 teams play each other. The participants were:
• Dr. Kirk Harum and his brother Dayne Harum• Al Mack and his partner David Creech• Dr. Stuart Futch and his partner Geoff Kokiko• Dr. Ken Wilkins and his partner Roger Clowers• David Lavigne and his partner Tom Nguyen ! We started at 9am and finished around 1pm. Most of the matches went the distance in the 8 game pro set format and everyone played well! We were thankful for the great weather in the upper 70’s and the nice luncheon supplied by the Club. ! I would like to thank all the participants who signed up. I know we had a great time and we look forward to doubling this event next year. The Harum family ended up taking home the championship. ! Congratulations to Dr. Harum and his brother Dayne for coming through the draw with a hard fought victory. We look forward to having everyone back next year.
