Nippon Koei strives to create a rich living space by developing urban and
railway-side areas in parallel with infrastructure construction, and designing
airport and railway station buildings to meet the demand for urban
development mainly in emerging Asian countries.
Nippon Koei has implemented projects (about 3,000 per year) to
underpin the foundations of people’s daily lives, such as
development and maintenance of social capital including rivers,
roads, etc., and regional reforms to realize rich and safe living.
Nippon Koei underpins development in the developing countries of Africa, the Middle East and Latin America as well as primary countries in Asia by providing support in a broad range of fields including water resources, energy, urban development, transportation, agricultural development, and the environment.
Nippon Koei has worked on the development of power sources and the
promotion of business supporting power demand in Japan and overseas.
The Company has engaged in new construction and repairs of substations,
switching stations, power stations, the formation of dam management
systems at hydroelectric power plants, etc.

BESS Control System (NK-EMS)
Project Summary
Implemented a test connected to the actual BESS.
Measurement of operation confirmation based on FFR test specification, communication response time / response time of power storage system.
Test result
Confirm the normality of communication between the BESS site controller and NK-EMS.
Performing the test based on FFR test the National Grid. Confirm the normality of the following items.
· Speed of delivering the response
· Proportionality of the response
· Sustainability of the response
Request response time (within 10 seconds) of FFR fully satisfied. We got the possibility to respond to EFR request response time (within 1 second).
NK-EMS successfully tested with a 4MWh BESS (partly owned by NK)

Development of a BESS in Belgium (25MWh)
Ruien Energy Storage NV (RES) is a joint venture between NK and the Belgium company Yuso.
RES is currently developing a Battery-based Energy Storage System (BESS) in Ruien (East Flanders, Belgium).
The BESS aims to deliver ancillary services to European grid operators (TSOs) as well as energy services to local businesses at the site of the former 800MW coal-fired power plant currently under post-decommissioning redevelopment.
The BESS commissioning is expected for early 2020. The capacity of the energy storage installation will be 25 MW with the option to enlarge its size later.
