F Happy New Year and welcome to our 1st issue for 2012. The first quarter of the year has once again been busy for us as we have been planning and preparing for the “World Kidney Day 2012” celebrations in Malaysia. This year we had a “World Kidney Day 2012 Run” in Dataran Merdeka on 4 March 2012 followed by a convoy to Johor Baru, Melaka, Seremban,Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. The main objective of the convoy was to promote organ donation and to get members of the public at all these venues to pledge to become an organ donor. The convoy team distributed freebies at the malls and also distributed or-gan donation pledge forms. We will give you more information about our “World Kidney Day 2012” celebrations in our next issue. In this issue, we also share with you the many family day gatherings we had with our patients as well as the Chinese New Year cheer that was brought to our pa-tients by many good Samaritans. A special highlight in this issue is the “Thoughtful Gestures Saves Lives” campaign that was initiated by the staff of NKF. All staff of NKF agreed to have RM11 deducted from their salary to help our poor patients to defray a portion of their dialysis bills. A total of RM 2,838 was shared among 11 patients on the auspicious date: 11 November 2011 (11/11/11). We are happy to share with you a special article written by our new Dietician, Ms Syaidatun on “Eating out the Healthier Way”. Here she highlights how to select and make food choices when eating at “mamak” restaurants. I am sure you will love the tips! We also successfully kicked off the 12th batch of Post Basic Haemodialysis Course with 40 new students. So far 206 students have graduated from the course with 100% passes. We also take this opportunity to thank each and every donor highlighted in this issue. You contribution will certainly help us to help Malaysians suffering from end stage kidney failure, who lack access to or cannot afford dialysis treatment. Currently, NKF has more than 1,450 patients receiving subsidized dialysis treatment in 24 dialy-sis centres nationwide. Happy Reading.
Thank you
Dr Prasad MenonChief Editor
MESSAGE FROM CHIEF EDITOR
Staff nurses, doctor, patients and their families made up the total of 140 people who turned up at the NKF –
Fungates Superflow Dialysis Center Annual Family Day at Crystal Crown Hotel, Kepong on 4 December 2011.
In addition to a sumptuous meal with ‘live’ entertainment; everyone had a joyous time of fun, laughter, games
and rewards. Up for grabs were more than 60 electrical goods which were
given away as lucky draws – inclusive of a 32” LCD TV! On the romantic side,
two couples from the nursing team won a 2-days complimentary stay at the
Crystal Crown Hotel complete with high tea for two. The patients later
remarked that they had a lot of fun, that it was a great way to destress with
family and friends and were looking forward to the next family day already!
A Family Day outing was organized by NKF –
Kelab Lions Alor Star (Host) on 31 December
2011 for the patients and their family members
to enjoy a fun get-together at Taman Rimba,

Eating-out has been a part of our culture. Most of us do it
and nowadays we do it more often than ever before -
during festive seasons, celebration or during social gath-
erings. Choosing healthy food while eating-out is a challenge especially in Malaysia where we have endless access to food! Of course,
we have restaurants that operate for 24 hours, such as fast food chains as well as every Malaysian’s favorite hangout – “The Mamak.”
Mamak restaurants are very unique for Malaysians because we can find all types of people there the young ones, the not-so young
ones, and a mix of all races. Other than that, people gather in mamak restaurants to socialize, watch football games or just to watch other
people! So, here comes the question: How do we apply the concept of ‘healthy eating’ at this frequent hangout? Too much of a good
thing can be bad for our health – or so we have been told. Therefore, we need to keep in mind that variety, moderation and balance are
the key considerations when choosing what to eat at mamak restaurants.
Here are some tips that we can follow: -
The Food (General rule is to control portion size!)
1. Choose thosai, chapatti or naan instead of roti canai (1 piece is enough!) – Roti canai is made out of white flour and ghee,
which is basically saturated fat that will increase cholesterol in our body. Consequently, it may clog our arteries over the
years.Imagine what will happen after years of eating roti canai! So, choose sensibly! Only eat them if you have really strong
cravings! (Still, no more than one piece in a week!)
2. Choose dhall curry, and ask for vegetables in it (brinjal/eggplant, carrot, long bean) – Dhall is a legume, which is high in
protein so it is good to incorporate them in your meal.
3. Choose tandoori chicken – Tandoori means cooked in a tandoor, a traditional clay oven and is similar to the grill. This is a
better option as opposed to deep-fried chicken provided that we remove the chicken skin before eating!
4. Choose mixed rice – Mixed rice is better than fried rice because - well, it is not fried! Just go easy with the selection of dishes.
Another thing you can do is control the rice portion, whereas fried rice, it is usually more of a one-plate meal. Ask for ‘half
rice’ or even less than that and load up your plate with vegetables. Cabbage and bean sprouts (taugeh) are the two most
common vegetables in mamak restaurants and eating them is better than not eating any vegetables at all. For protein option,
try curry chicken or fish than fried chicken or fish.Gentle reminder: Go easy on the gravies!
5. Instant Noodles/mee/kueyteow/all fried items – Avoid all these if possible! If you have strong cravings ask the cook to include
more veggies in the dish and separate it in half so that you can share the portion. Cravings do not mean having them every day!
“The Mamak”
5 National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia
The Drinks (General rule is to order “kurang manis”!)
6. Teh tarik (and also any other drink that is added with condensed milk) – Well, obviously we can choose the ‘O’
version without milk but if we still want a bit of the creamy taste,we can order ‘teh C ’ - which is teh tarik made
with evaporated milk. In this way, we can reduce our intake of sweetened condensed milk.
7. Choose less sweet drinks like ‘limau’ or barley – Lime or ‘limau’ contains vitamin C and barley has soluble fibre that
can help lower blood cholesterol. Just make sure to eat the barley pearls as well because the fibre is in the pearls!
8. Stop at one drink, and continue with plain water afterwards – This is especially good for people who spend hours
after hours at the mamak restaurants. Just order one sweet drink and once it is finished, order plain water if you
still need a drink.
These tips are very basic and easy to apply. Healthy eating should be an integral part of our lifestyle and we should
not feel burdened by it. So, let us celebrate our life by taking good care of our health. Happy dining!
With the aim to raise awareness on the importance
of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the
impact of the disease and its associated health problems,
World Kidney Day started off in year 2006 and has since
become an annual celebration globally. This year, the theme for WKD 2012 is “Donate Kidneys for Life
Receive” – which focuses on the positive outcome of kidney transplantation and the life-saving aspect of
organ donation.

A special day (11 November 2011) was made memorable with good deeds from the staff of National
Kidney Foundation of Malaysia. During this “Thoughtful Gestures Saves Lives” campaign, 247 NKF staff
agreed to have a deduction of RM11 from their salaries, which amounted to RM2,838.00 for this meaningful
endeavor. The funds collected were given out to 11 hardcore poor kidney patients to help defray a portion of
their dialysis bills. A cheque presentation ceremony from the charity drive was held at NKF’s Headquarters in
