Note to the TeacherUse the following pages to guide your class through an

examination the work of author/illustrator Yuyi Morales.

The response pages can be used as a class (teacher

fills in page with student responses) or individually by

the student. Students are asked to collect the

vocabulary that stands out to them, an image that

they like, and a quote. The students also should come

up with a statement of theme or author’s purpose.

Skills addressed: vocabulary, visual literacy, and

theme or author’s purpose

Ideas for Yuyi-inspired projects:

• An alphabet or counting book that focuses on

students’ cultural backgrounds

• A story that features Grandma Beetle and Señor

Calavera in a new situation

• A research project on the origin of one of Niño’s

fellow luchadores, the life of Cesar Chavez,

Georgia O’Keefe, or the Mexican holiday Día de los

Muertos.

• A poem about Frida Kahlo (or another artist) in

which the student finishes the phrases presented in

the book. For example, for “I see…,” the student

might write, “I see my reflection in the mirror as I

paint my self-portrait.
