English Connection

Adjectives are words that describe nouns. In English, the adjective almost always comes before the noun.

In Spanish, the adjective usually comes after the noun

Example

Key: noun adjective

the serious students

los estudiantes serios

Noun-Adjective Agreement

In Spanish, adjectives match the gender and number of the nouns they describe.

Here’s how…

Noun- Adjective Agreement

Adjectives that end in –e (for example, inteligente) match BOTH genders.

Example: El maestro inteligenteLa maestra inteligente

Noun-Adjective Agreement

Many adjectives that end in a consonant match both genders.

Example el amigo jovenla amiga joven

Some adjectives that end in a consonant add –a to form the feminine singular. These exceptions have to be memorized!

Example el chico trabajadorla chica trabajadora

Forming Plural Adjectives

To make an adjective plural, add -s if it ends in a vowel; add -es if it ends in a consonant

Examples Las chicas trabajadoras Los chicos trabajadores

So… alta, alto, altas, and altos ALL mean tall… just depends on gender of noun

Dos preguntas…

Two important questions to ask every time…Is the noun MASCULINE or

FEMININE?

Is the noun SINGULAR or PLURAL?
