• A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing or idea.

– Persons: Mrs. Platinsky, teacher, student

– Places: Lazar Middle School, classroom

– Things: desk, football

– Ideas: happiness, self-control, democracy

Common and Proper Nouns• A proper noun names a particular person,

place, thing or idea.

• A proper noun is always capitalized.

• A common noun names any one of a group of persons, places, things or ideas.– It generally is not capitalized.

Concrete and Abstract Nouns

• A concrete noun names something that can be recognized through any of the five senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, and hear)

• An abstract noun names something that cannot be recognized through the senses.

• An abstract noun names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic.
