Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

urCatholicliturgicalyearfollowsarhythmiccycle.Itpointsustowardbeginningsandendsand,insodoing,emphasizesanimportanttruththatcanonly

begraspedthroughfaith.WearefastapproachingtheThirtyFourthorlastSundayintheChurchyearandwecelebratetheFeastoftheSolemnityofJesusChristtheSovereignKing.

OurLiturgicalseasonsofferusawaytoreceivetimeasagift.Theircelebrationcanhelpustogrowinthelifeofgrace.TheyinviteustowalkwiththeLordinawayoflifeinfusedwithsupernaturalmeaning.Theliturgicalseasonshelpusmarktimewiththosedeepertruthsthatmattermost.Humanbeingshavealwaysmarkedtimebysignificantevents.Therealquestionisnotwhetherwewillmarktime,buthowwewilldoso.Whateventsandwhatmessagesareweproclaiminginourcalendaring?FortheChristian,timeisnotmeanttobeatyrant,somehowrulingoverus.Rather,itistobeateacher,instructingus,aseriesofinvitationstoallowtheLordtobeourKing,toreigninourreal,dailylives.Ratherthananenemy,timeistobeacompanion,afriend.ItisapathalongwhichtheredemptivelovingplanofatimelessGodisrevealedandreceived.InChrist,timeisnowgivenbacktousasagift,afieldofchoiceandapathtoholinessandhumanflourishing.

Timeisheadingsomewhere.ChristiansmarktimebythegreateventsoftheLife,Death,andResurrectionofJesusChrist.WearealwaysmovingforwardandtowardHislovingreturn.

Asweprogressthroughliturgicaltimeweareinvitedtoexperiencethegreateventsoffaith.Throughourreadingsandliturgicalprayer,weareinvitedduringthislastfewweeksoftheyeartoreflectonthelastthings—death,judgment,heavenandhell.Wedosoinordertochange,tobeconverted,andthustoentermorefullyintotheDivineplan.

ItisnocoincidencethatourFeast,theFeastofChristtheKingandthelastweekoftheyearpassesthroughthesecularFeastofThanksgivingthisyear.ThereisnoseparationforthebelieverbetweenthesecularandtheSacred.InthegreateventoftheIncarnationandthefullnessofthePaschalMystery,allismadenew.WedonotbringGodintotime,Heisitsauthor.WeareinvitedbygracetocometoacknowledgethatHeisandthenreceiveHis“createdtime”asagift,agood,tobegivenbacktoHimthroughlivingourlivesinChristforthesakeoftheworld.ThanksgivingisagreatFeastmadeevenfullerinthemeaningfortheChristian.ThewordEucharistmeansThanksgiving.LetuswalkthroughthelastfewweeksoftheliturgicalyearandjoinwiththosewhomwelovearoundthetableofThanksgiving,andthenletuswalkthewayoffaithintothenewLiturgicalSeason,Advent,gettingourselvesandtheworldofourowntimereadyforthecomingofChristtheKing.ItisallgiftandIammostgrateful!Fr.BrianSullivan
