Research at Undergraduate Institutions (RUI)
Eligibility: must be Predominantly Undergraduate Institution (PUI)
– 2-yr and 4-yr colleges– master’s level and small doctoral colleges that have
undergraduate enrollment larger than graduate and award no more than 10/yr PhD degrees in all science fields (avg 2-5 yrs)
RUI supports research of faculty from PUI– Funding to individual or collaborative group– Purchase of shared instrumentation
Deadline/Target dates: Jan 10 and July 10
Cross-disciplinary Research at Undergraduate Institutions (CRUI)
•Goal – Fund cross-disciplinary research at RUIs. Must have minimum 3 collaborators (at least one non-biologist); Co-PIs can be from R1s
•Support for faculty salary and travel, equipment ($50k in first yr), supplies, postdoc or technician, student stipend/wages, etc.
•Award size: approx $250,000/yr for 3-4 yrs
•Full Proposal Deadline: June 15, 2004
Research Opportunity Awards (ROA supplement)
•Provide support for faculty from PUIs to participate in ongoing, NSF-funded research projects for limited periods, usually a summer•Goal – To enhance research program at home institution, improve research & teaching at PUIs•Funded as supplements to active NSF grants
– Salary or stipend for undergraduate faculty – Travel for the undergraduate faculty member to the host laboratory and/or
to attend a meeting– Research supplies

REU Sites Program Goal: Provide meaningful research experiences to
undergraduate students to attract them to, and retain them in, science and engineering

Undergraduate Mentoring in Environmental Biology (UMEB)
•Goal - Increase participation of under-represented minority groups in environmental biology
•Provide meaningful research experience for undergraduates during academic year and summer; enrichment activities, field work
• Funding of up to $500,000 for 4 years (small equipment allowed in first yr)
•Deadline: May 15, 2005 (tentative)
Undergraduate Research Centers (URC)
• Division of Chemistry• Funding: up to $500,000 for 5 years plus up to $200,000 for equipment in 1st yr;planning: $50,000 for 1-2 yrs• Goal -- Expand reach of undergraduate research
to 1st and 2nd -year college students and enhance research capacity of institution• Letter of Intent Due Date(s): Dec. 01, 2003• Full Proposal Deadline: January 16, 2004
Major Research Instrumentation (MRI)
•Goal—support purchase of research instruments
•Cost sharing: none for PUIs and 50% for R1s
•Award size: $100,000 - $2 million except for PUIs, <$100,000
•Award Duration: 3 yr standard

•FY03 budget: $86 M; FY04: $108 M
Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI)
The goal is to improve the quality of STEM education for all students. Program has four tracks:•Educational Materials Development
– textbooks, software, or laboratory materials for commercial distribution
•National Dissemination – faculty professional development opportunities
•Adaptation and Implementation – improve education in STEM through adaptation of exemplary
materials •Assessment of Student Achievement
– develop and disseminate assessment practices, materials, and measures to improve the courses
Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI)
•The anticipated total funding amount for all tracks in CCLI is $40 million.

– Curriculum development– Preparation of college faculty and secondary school teachers– Professional development for faculty and teachers– Research relating to technician education
•Emphasis on two-year colleges – Education of technicians for high-technology fields – Promotes articulation between 2-year and 4-year institutions
•Deadlines: Preliminary Proposal: April 21, 2004 (Required only for Large Scale Materials Development (LSMD) and Large Scale Teacher Preparation (LSTP) proposals). Preliminary proposals are recommended but not required for all others. Full Proposal Deadline: October 08, 2004
