• Research & Publications in Marine Science in digital form, including preprints, published articles, technical reports, working papers and more.

OceanDocs

• OceanDocs is supported by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) specifically to collect, preserve and facilitate access to all research output from members of their Ocean Data and Information Networks (ODINS). It is one of a number of complementary thematic digital marine and aquatic repositories including the Aquatic Commons, which is supported by the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC). The records of both repositories are harvested by Avano which aggregates records from marine and aquatic repositories around the World.

OdinPubAfrica - Goals

• Facilitate publishing of research by African scientists (e-journal as well as e-archive) thereby promoting African research and increasing access by African scientists to international research forums

• Make scientific publications in the field of marine science and oceanography in Africa more easily and freely accessible

• Enhance the internal scientific communication• Develop an OAI-compliant repository providing

access to full-text publications created by scientists affiliated to African institutes

A Single Repository for OdinAfrica

Limited internet capacity in Africa:– At the end of 2003, most connections were

still poor – Internet connection at the institutes in

2004:• OK - Algeria, Egypt, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar,

Morocco, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, Sth-Africa, Tunisia, Tanzania

• Modem: Benin, Comoros, Gabon, Ghana, Togo• Not: Angola, Cameroon, Congo

Why DSpace ?

• The community-collection structure: Every organization has her own pages/identity

• Handle system (stable unique ID) • Most customable system• Active community• Marc Goovaerts expertise

Development of OdinPubAfrica
