Trust in the Lord with all
your heart; do not depend
on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do
and he will show you which
path to take.

Peter, the most outspoken disciple, voted most likely to put his foot in his mouth, bold
and brash Peter makes just as many mistakes as he does getting things right. It is a
wonder, at times, why Jesus says Peter is the rock that Jesus will build his Church up-
on. Yet, Peter is. You are reading this because of people like Peter. People who God
used to share the promise of hope and life through Jesus.
There are many reasons why Jesus liked Peter so much and used him to start building
the Church. One of the reasons is that Peter had a sense of wonder, a sense of longing
in his faith. Peter was not content with the status quo, he wanted more, he longed to
see God do great things and Peter wanted to be a part of it. In fact, we hear in the gos-
pel how, when Peter’s brother Andrew met Jesus, he went to his brother and told him
that he had found the one they were looking for. For Peter was already looking for
more. His faith...his life, was a journey of going deeper with God.
This sense of longing is what in Luke 5:4-6 leads Peter, who made his living fishing, to
listen to Jesus, a carpenter, let out his fishing nets one more time after a long hard night
of work. Luke tells us that Peter and his partners had caught no fish that night, but Je-
sus said to go out deeper and cast their nets. Jesus stirred something inside of Peter.
Jesus spoke to that sense of wonder and longing in Peter. Jesus touched Peter’s desire
to be a part of the great things of God.
Peter wasn’t sure, but, he was willing to try to take one more step on a journey. So he
went deeper, cast his nets, and God did great things. This is what it means to be a
Christian, a disciple, a follower of Christ; to be willing to go deeper with God. During
worship in October, this is what we will be focusing on.
We start the month celebrating World Communion. Then we will hear three times that
Jesus asks Peter, asks us, to go deeper. I pray that during this time that your sense of
wonder, your sense of longing, your desire to go deeper with God will be stirred just like
Peter. We will have a chance to say “yes” together with Peter, and to cast out our nets
and be a part of the great things God is doing here and now.
Blessings

World Communion Sunday is a celebra-tion observed by several Christian
denominations, taking place on the first Sunday of every October, that
promotes Christian unity and ecumeni-cal cooperation. It focuses on an ob-
servance of the Eucharist.
World Communion Sunday is one of
the six church-wide Special Sundays of the United Methodist Church. The
World Communion Offering provides scholarships for US and international
students. Students who receive schol-arships study in a wide variety of fields: family pastoral care, Christian
and Muslim relations, clinical psychol-ogy, peace and governance, crop
production, law, health and more. www.umcgiving.org

press our gratitude for all you’ve done.
Thank you so much for the beautiful

will always be grateful to you for your
generous,thoughtful gift.”

“Thank you for a great 90th birthday celebration at
Coffee Hour and for so many lovely cards!! ‘Tis
said that inside every 90-year-old is a bewildered
35-year-old wondering “What happened?!” What
happened to me is some adventures and a whole lot
of good friends, really high quality people! A rich
blessing! Again, thank you!

A huge THANK YOU to all of our Church
members who supported the Community Ta-
ble at St. Matthias Church on Tuesday, Sep-tember 19th. We served nearly 100 guests
and volunteers! There was an abundance of
food for all, and we received many com-ments on how delicious and enjoyable it
was. What a wonderful community outreach
for our church, along with the Unitarian Uni-
versalist and Faith Evangelical Free church-es. A job well done! Again, thanks to
all...and be ready for the third Tuesday in
January.

Senegal Mission Initiative
The leadership of the United Methodist Church in Senegal requires a constant re-
production of fully qualified Ordained
Pastors. This requires a clear path to ordi-
nation for those called for the Ordained Ministry. Also, continued training and de-
velopment for all laity will provide a
greater sense of connection, understand-ing and unity for the United Methodist
Church in Senegal. Finally, Ordained Pas-
tors and their cost of living needs supple-
ments. (www.umcmission.org)
Mujila Falls Agriculture Center
The goal is to help farm families increase their farm incomes and become less de-
pendent upon scavenging for rats and
mice. This is to be done with sustainable
agriculture and leadership training. They are working with the Lunda people of ex-
treme Northwest Zambia. The greatest
need is to improve protein, vitamin and mineral content in the local diet and
help families increase incomes so they
can provide for schooling, medical care,
clothing, additional food and other es-sentials. Paul Webster is a United Meth-
odist Missionary serving as the economic
development specialist at Mujila Falls. Paul grew up in Wisconsin and also
served as a local pastor in Wisconsin.

UMCOR US Disaster Response
When disaster strikes, it is local churches that provide the first response to their
communities. The basic understanding
that disaster response is local, forms the foundation for UMCOR’s US disaster train-
ing and response.
When responding to a disaster in the Unit-
ed States, UMCOR provides the following
things: Financial Assistance. If the bish-op of affected conference contacts
UMCOR, an emergency grant may be sent.
Expertise. UMCOR’s disaster response ex-perience and knowledge are made availa-
ble to those in need. Networking. Getting
connected with NGO’s, volunteers, ex-
perts, local government and other organi-zations can help communities recover
from disaster. To make a contribution, go
to www.umcor.org and click on US Disas-ter Response, Advance #901670. This ap-
plies to both Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
If you give through UMCOP, our church will get credit for your response.

Jesus welcomed all
who came into His presence. Let us
reflect that same
spirit through our Ministry of Hospital-
ity. As people enter this Church to wor-
ship and praise the Lord, may they hear
His voice in our words and see His love in our actions. May our “welcome” re-
flect our joy at their presence and our
“good-bye” encourage them to return soon. Offering food and fellowship on
Sunday mornings is an important part of our Hospitality Ministry. Your help is
needed in order to keep this extremely
important ministry “alive and vibrant at Church of the Pines” by signing up
to serve as a host for Sunday Hospitali-
ty. Individuals, families, and church
groups are asked to serve, ensuring our
Sunday morning Hospitality continues. There is a sign-up sheet on the counter
in the Ministry Center. Please stop in
and volunteer to be a Hospitality Host!

People ask, “What does a Stephen Minister do?” A beautiful poem by Ann
Weems, in her book Searching for Shalom,
describes how a Stephen Minister can help:
I See Your Pain
I see your pain and want to banish it with the wave of a star, but have no star.
I see your tears and want to dry them with the hem of an angel’s gown, but have no angel.
I see your heart fallen to the ground and want to return it wrapped in cloths woven of rainbow, but have no rainbow.
God is the One who has stars, and angels and rainbows and I am the one God sends to sit beside you until the stars come out and the angels dry your tears and your heart is back in place, rainbow blessed.

Trustees’ Report for September 2017
The parsonage repairs remain undone. We are having trouble scheduling. The
parsonage piano sill needs to be tuned. After the Trustees and SPRC develop the
new parsonage inspection list we will set
a date for inspection of the parson-age...hopefully, by early November.
We continue to try to work with the
property owner of the building at 319 Milwaukee to resolve the ice/water ac-
cumulation on the Rocking Horse Child-
care Center playground. The Rocking Horse kitchen needs a significant up-
grade. Cabinets are falling apart, coun-
ter tops are in bad shape, and appliances need to be replaced. We are working
with a contractor to develop plans.
The south sidewalk repair/replacement is still in process. We will be set-
ting a date for the Fall cleanup within
the next week. The snow blower has been inspected and is ready for winter
use. Slip guards on the steps at the south entrance will be replaced.

Stoke ‘er Up
Bob and I were up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) in northern Minnesota again for two weeks. On some nights we built a campfire; sometimes for the warmth, sometimes to keep the mosquitoes at bay, and sometimes just for the wonder of watching the embers.
I love to sit and watch a fire - how the flames change as new wood is added, how the hot coals get the new tinder started, how the fire burns warmer and brighter as the wood and coals are brought together. Adding more fuel to the fire is called stoking. I don’t know if “destoking” is a word or not, but I do know a fire soon goes out as the coals are spread out and no longer have contact with each other.
You may have heard of the story of the pastor who used a fire to show a parishioner how important it was to be an active part of the church. Without saying a word, the pastor simply removed a coal from the fire in the fire place the two men were sitting by. Both he and the parishioner watched the coal grow cold when removed from the other burning coals. It was evident the piece of coal needed the others to burn brightly and warmly.
The same is true of people in a church family. We need each other. When I looked up the word “stoke” in the dictionary, I found it also means m “encourage.” By being together we can burn so much more brightly, giving light and warmth to those around us. In addition, by being together we encourage one another to live the Chris-tian faith and provide support to those going through a difficult time. The people of the Church of the Pines have shown time and again how much we can get done and how much we can help by serving together.
I encourage you to keep - Holly Nash stoking the fire and fanning the flame at the Church of the Pines.
Lay Leader & Ministry Council Page 10

The Trustees, Finance, United Methodist Women and Missions Reports are included in this issue of Pine Chips 2.0. Lay Leader’s report reminds us of the All Church Breakfast on September 24th. There was also discussion of a new ministry called Meal Train Plus which is an email-based program used to schedule services to people in need (meals, childcare, transportation, shopping, etc.). Holly Nash will continue to research this program. UMCOP’s Stewardship Program will be held in October, with a letter and pledge card to be mailed to church members on August 9th. The annual United Methodist Charge Conference will be held on November 5th. Details will be forthcoming. SPRC is currently working on identifying church staffing needs.
