What a year 2011 has been, with the drought being the center focus.
The drought started out west and worked its way east, eventually taking over the entire state. Many breeders had to severely reduce their cow herds. However, it is amazing how resourceful cattlemen can be when the stress is on. Developing new rations, different feeding strategies, and moving cattle to better pastures were common practices in many operations. There are many negatives that can occur in a drought this severe and the quality and prices for hay hauled into Oklahoma were sometimes ridiculous. But in these times, we found many people that wanted to help their fellow cattlemen; people really found out who their friends were. On a positive note, the quality of all cattle in Oklahoma will increase as only the absolute best survived the culling process. Prices for all cattle are at record highs, and the prices of next year’s calf crop could top anything we can imagine. 2011 made us realize what is really important: friends, family, and this tremendous breed of cattle we raise.
The OKSSA would like to sincerely thank all those who supported the association throughout the year and wish everyone much success in 2012.

State Fair Futurity
The OKSSA will host the Tulsa Futurity Sale in conjunction with the 2012 Tulsa State Fair. This is a great opportunity for the members to market show quality heifers and steers. All animals must be halter broke and manageable. We had 21 head of high quality genetics at the 2011 sale and we are excited about the 2012 sale. The Champion and Reserve Champion showback heifers will receive $1000 and $500 respectively. Anyone interested in nominating an animal for the 2012 sale should contact Tom White at 317.224.7502.

Junior of the Year
S hannon White, a freshman at Oklahoma State University, was named the 2011-2012
OKSSA Junior of the Year at the group’s annual meeting held July 30, 2011 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Shannon started showing livestock at the age of 5. Throughout her 4-H and FFA career, she has successfully shown cattle, sheep and horses at the local, county, district, state and national levels. Shannon attended the FFA state and National conventions while a member of the Eastern Hancock High School and Perkins-Tyron High School chapters. While a member of the Eastern Hancock High School FFA Chapter she was chapter reporter and received her Greenhand Degree as well as the Rising Sun Award. She was a member of the Eastern Hancock livestock and meats judging teams as well as Parliamentary Procedures and Agricultural Issues teams. In 2009 she traveled to the National Western Meats Judging contest and was 9th overall. Shannon also traveled to the Aksarben Livestock Judging contest as part of the 2009 Eastern Hancock Livestock Judging 4-H team where she was 4th high individual in Swine. Shannon was 3rd high individual at the Oklahoma State FFA Meats Evaluation contest as part of the Perkins-Tryon Meats Judging team. She was Valedictorian at Perkins-Tryon High School and is currently studying Pre-Vet at OSU. She is active in the CASNR FIT program as well as Oklahoma Collegiate Cattlewomen’s, Oklahoma Junior Cattlemen’s, Oklahoma Club Calf Association and Block & Bridle Club.
Shannon has been active in the Simmental breed since a young age. She has shown at numerous state, regional and national classic events. Prior to relocating to Oklahoma, she was a member of the Kansas and Indiana Junior Simmental organizations. Since relocating, she has been an active member of the Oklahoma Junior Simmental Simbrah Association where she served as Northeastern Representative and Senior Ambassador in 2009-2010, 2010-2011 Photographer and is the 2011-2012 OKSSA Queen and Northeastern Representative. She is an active member of the American Junior Simmental Association. In 2010 she received the Silver Merit Award
and is currently serving on the AJSA Board of Trustees.
Shannon takes an active role in her family’s Simmental and Sim-Angus operation. She is passionate about the beef industry and the people involved in it. Shannon is a great ambassador for Simmental genetics at any beef function and the OKSSA is proud to have her as our Junior of the Year.

2011 Family of the Year
Cheryl was a farm and ranch girl, who was very active in school. She was a member of the local 4-H and FFA organizations and loved to play basketball. She showed swine, sheep, dairy, and beef…excelling in showmanship with many trophies to her credit. She was raised in Strong City, Oklahoma and
attended the Cheyenne Public Schools.Jay was actively involved in the show ring as well and always maintained his
academics. He attended the Nowata Public Schools.Jay and Cheryl met while attending Panhandle State University, where they both
worked at the DeKalb Swine Division in Kansas. They were married in Strong City during the worst weather you could imagine…snow and ice, with the temperature hovering about 5 degrees. They honeymooned in Elk City, Oklahoma, where on the second day of their honeymoon, they called Harold and Carolyn Gwartney (Cheryl’s parents) to come and play foosball them…imagine that! Of course, Harold and Carolyn braved the icy roads to share a night of foosball with the newlyweds, having a grand old time.
They started their married life on a ranch they purchased near Nowata, Oklahoma, where they had two children, Samantha and Jacob. Both children show cattle, play sports, and are active in their local 4-H and FFA chapters.
The family remains active in their church and livestock organizations. Cheryl is a member of the OKSSA Board, currently serving as Vice President, and Jay and Cheryl continue to maintain their cattle operation. In addition to serving as Vice President, Cheryl enjoys working with the Oklahoma Juniors as their Junior Advisor. Jay and Cheryl have been and will continue to be great supporters and valuable members of the OKSSA.
The Johnsons would like to thank the OKSSA for being named the Family of the Year.

There’s a cloud in the westAnd my heart’s a beatin’ fast
But low and beholdThat cloud went right on past!
The weatherman said we haveRain in the forecast
But he also said there’s notMuch hope for it to last.
We’ve sold half our cattleWe may sell some more
There ‘s hardly any hay in our barnAnd wheat pasture is not in store.
But no matter how bad timesMay be
We have smiles on our facesWhen our family and friends we see.
No matter who has the worst problemsNo matter how bad things may be
Cattlemen are men of strength and prideWith a much stronger woman at their side!
